Os9 -> Panther Upgrade

Hi all,

A colleague has a G4 tower running OS9, and has decided to take the leap to OSX.

He's currently running OS 9.0.4, and would like to know what the upgrade path is like to OSX - how should he go about the installation, what're the likely pitfalls, and so forth?

Thanks guys :D

I've heard that problems can occur using the "upgrade" method, so if possible ask him to back things up onto external HDs, CD/DVDs or onto a seperate partition and do a clean installation.

Congrats on him upgrading.. :D

Yes, have him backup all his vital info, then reformat the disk and do a clean install. I also recommend he have at least 512MB of RAM (although it's not required). Panther is a great OS, so he should have no problem with speed.

The OS X installation process is extremely simple, and takes only 20-30 minutes. If disk space is a concern, I recommend doing a custom install- doing so will allow you to avoid installing all the extra language sets and printer drivers, most of which you will never use.

If you have any other questions, dont hesitate to ask. :)
