[help] Shell32.dll Problem

anyone ever run into this error?

I have a custom shell32.dll, and when I tried to install the app Image-in this error pops up.

The Image-in exe file worked okay when I restored the original shell32.dll file, so it has to be something in my customized one. If anyone has any ideas on this I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks

yeah, you're right, it has to do with your custom shell32.dll. how large is it? which one are you using?

it might be too big. you can swap out some icons or avi files to shrink it. this is a common problem with custom shell32.dll.

It's 9.97MB in size. I started out with GuiReplacer then I customized it myself - I went through all the icons in Sushi Icon, and removed the 128, 96, and 72 sizes since I don't need larger than 64x64, so it wouldn't be so bloated. How will I ever know which Icon replacement is giving the error?!

hmm, i'm not really sure. my shell32.dll is 20-something mb, but i haven't had any problems with it.

you might want to ask flyakite, since he modded system files. he might be able to help you out.

Are you modding an original shell32.dll from your system or a modified one you downloaded and modified further? I remember seeing somebody's custom .dll out there that was creating memory address problems and it was because of mods beyond icons, bitmaps and AVI's but I don't remember whos or what, so if those are the only mods to your .dll that shouldn't create a problem no matter how many extra icons you have in it. Mine is bloated to over 30 MB and I've never had a problem, I used my original 7+MB shell32.dll and replaced icons, BMP's and AVI's, no string table mods or anything like that so I've avoided any memory issues. If you're using a mod you dl'ed I suggest you make your own from your original and see if that works.

I have exactly the same problem with my own customized shell32.dll file. The only modifications I have done is icon and AVI replacement. It's around 10.2MB big. Try opening your Calculation application. Does it work? Mine doesn't with this shell32.dll.

Anyhow, Kasteo's Noia shell32 suffers from this problem as well. In an earlier email, he mentioned that it was the AVI files that were resulting in the errors. Without the AVIs, the shell32 works fine. He has since solved the problem, but I don't know exactly what he did. Perhaps you could ask him.

Max Power - yeah this was my original shell32.dll but it has been remodded probably 4 or 5 times. All I've changed are icons and avis.

hush66 - I hadn't tried running the windows calculator before, but yes you are correct, running the calculator gives the same error, so it looks like we have similar problems! I do remember adding a couple new AVI's this last time. I'll try removing them and see if this solves anything.

Thanks
