Hard Drive Question

Call me stupid...but im not sure how to go about doing this..

Im running low on space on my current hard drive and im in the process of looking for a new one....it will probably end up being 80 gigs but thats not important... once I put the new harddrive in my computer(not replace it) i want to install windows on the new hard drive and boot from that one...then i want to copy the files i want from the other hard drive onto this one and format the old one. do i have to do anything other than what i just described? oh and i know i can format the HD while im installing windows but how do i format it to just be a blank drive?

here's an easy way.

if you're putting them on the same channel:

once you get the new drive, set the jumper to master and remove the old drive. set the old drive's jumper to slave. install both drives and turn on the computer.

get into the bios and make sure you can boot from the cd (change the boot order so cd-rom is first). boot from the xp installation cd and begin the set up. you can format your new drive, create partitions, and install xp, all in one session. i recommend setting up partitions and doing ntfs formatting (not quick), then proceeding with the installation of xp.

once in xp, you can copy your files over from your old drive. then, if you want to clean off your old drive, go to run > diskmgmt.msc > right click the old hard drive and select format.

okie

1. make a Ghost image of the old HDD (by Norton Ghost 2003)

2. install the new HDD - by setting jumper(s) as Secondary HDD

3. ghost the image (in the 1st step) into the new HDD

4. change the new HDD from Secondary HDD to Master HDD and the old ones to Secondary HDD
