Ipod Music Extracter For Pc?

Does anyone know of an app that can extract music from an iPod and put it on a PC? I ask because when I got my new iPod, I put all my music on the iPod and deleted the copies on my notebook (small HD, needed the space). However, I forgot that some of the songs were in MP3Pro format, and thus sound crappy on the iPod. What I want to do is just get those songs back on my laptop so I can convert them to MP3 and then put them back on the iPod. Any suggestions?

i dont use an iPod so i cant b sure, but originally MusicMatch was the supported iPod software, mayb that can do it.

Ok, seems alot of people are looking to do this, so here goes.

If your using a mac with networking , its very simple, you just use any number of programs lik tinkertool, Podmaster, iPod2iTunes, iPodRip, and Podworks, Podworks works really great!! and just copy from a shared folder to your PC.

Now if you dont have access to a Mac, then it turns into a whole mess, you might want to wait a year until someone finishes the special software to do this. If not, well, here goes.You are going to need a few programs first.

1. Balisk mac emulator- THIS DOES NOT EMULATE OS X, just OLD MACS.

2. Macopen

3. Tinkertool -only program that will run under the emulator.

The iPod's songs are stored in an invisible folder at the root of the drive, called iPod_Control. This folder is hidden and locked from view.

Run the balisk emulator and install tinkertools, be sure to share your windows drives with balisk, now open tinkertools and copy the folder iPod_Control to your shared PC drive, be ready to wait a hellva long ass time, this going to take hours for huge music collections, limitations of the emulator slow this down to a snails pace. Go to bed, rest, get ready for part 2 which begins the next day.

Day 2. Morning.

On PC, you will see a file named iPod_Control, which you will not be able to open, has no extensions, and is huge. It may seem not working, but dont worry, its just a striped mac file format. macopen will scan the headers and detect that it is an apple format and open it!!!

Open macopen and mount the file with the program, LOOKIE there, all your music, now select everything and save to a new folder on your hard drive, get ready again, this is going to take some time(damn emulations again).

Day 2-3/4 Evening.

Open your new folder and enjoy your music!!!

It should be noted that some files will have corrupted names, or song titles, this is a by product of the emulation woes once, twice, then PC. This doesnt hurt your files, you just have to clean some of them up.

But there you have it, the very long, and painful way in which to backup your ipod to a PC, the best way to do this is to simply buy a cheap imac, and use the networking to your PC, much much, way super faster (minutes), easier, and keeps everything the way it suppose to be.

umm....yeah, it's acctually really simple on a PC, all you have to do is go to www.ephpod.com download the software (you can also go to www.download.com and look up ephpod and it should come up) and install it. then open ephpod and select the iPod drive and continue, in ephpod, once it loads the database and you can see the whole library, select the song you want to copy to you comp and right-click and select "Copy Songs To Directory" a window will come up, then select the folder you want to copy the song to and hit ok and voila! go to the folder you selected and it should be there.

I was under to assumption that ephpod is still one way- imports to the ipods, outlook, contacts, etc... I am seeing the macopen bundled with the unit, so it appears it has been overwritten and reworked. Great to know, saves me the manual way I listed from getting it to work.

It lets you view your iPod in windows explorer like a regular drive. You can drag and drop files on and off it. Very useful bit of software.

Here is what I did. First you need to tell the software (I know iTunes you can do this) to not automatically sync your iPod. When you do that, you should have the iPod just sitting there when you plug it in. Now make sure you can view hidden files and go to My Computer and you can see the iPod (if you are using XP, a dailog should pop-up just like when you put a CD into the CD-ROM drive). Open the iPod drive up and navagate to iPod_Control/Music/ and you will see a bunch of F## folders. The Music is in there. This is according to my memory, I must warn you that I just woke up about 10 min ago so my brain is not warmed up. Also the files don't have the nice layout name (you get ####.mp3) but you can use a batch tagger to fix that.
