ok...i installed mandrake 9

installation was flawless and then i boot

a screen came up with

failsafe

linux

windows

NT(windows XP)

floppy

i chose linux and then it start booting with console and text and at the end, asked for login name and password (with no graphics) :hmm:

i used username: root, password: the password for my root account

it is successful and next line came....i dun noe wat todo now to get into KDE...

someone on the internet said use command "startx" to start...

i also tried "xf86config"...

plz help

Did you try startx? I used linux for a few weeks, so i'm not by any means an expert or anything near that, but i think that boots into kde. At least thats how it worked with suse 8.2.

also...I've been trying to configue "xf86config" for ages...I mean trillions of times....

but still doesn't work...when I type "startx"...it always says that there's sth wrong with "xf86config"

Did you set up an acount for yourself when you installed Mandrake? Like a private acount? It is not recommended to use root as your usual acount, and i dont think X will be set up and configured on your root-acount when you install mandrake. If you have a private acount, log in to it, and i think x will start all by itself. If it doesnt, write "startx" and if X is configured, it will start.

you've got a SIS 6xx chipset???

ouahaha i got a SIS 650 graphic chip and it's not recognized with old Xfee server... as i remeber it's supported since the 2.3.2 or something like that... it's a big fu*** sh**... but i only need a gateway so i don't care of having X runing or not

try to have the lastest install of MDK (9.2 i guess) cause it can be the cause of your troubles, if it's already the case... then on installing did you choose the right graphic card (chip) when configuring XFree??? if you can't manage to start x, try to reinstall MDK and keep the default graphic adapter that is in the list when the install configure Xfree (the VESA graphic adapter) and try it

Mandrake is NOT a good distro for noobs, you should have gotten SuSE 9. Thats what I have.

You are completely wrong. I think that to just learn the basics of how Linux works, Mandrake or Red Hat are two very good distros. But again, this cat be proved in any way. Every person have to choose which distro they like best

i think mandrake is an exccelllent linux distro, for new beginners (ihate using the word ****) anyways, its very easy to set up and thats the "main" distro i started with and it got me started so very well.. i then moved on to hardder stuff.. it was mandrakes help that got me where i am today in linux. It got me ready for the harder ones. Suse, mandrake a great for new beginners. Now when you installed MDK 9.x did you make sure you went through the X configuration and tested your configuration before you ended the installation? you should always do that. But since you must not of, you going to have to try and configure it via xf86config or xfree86config (theres too many names for these lol) and try your best maybe multiple times, to get the info right.

What EXACTLY happens when you try "xf86config". What options do you choose? Any error messages?

What is the exact error message when you run "startx"?

i agree with contrasutra, MDK is a very good distro for the beginners, easy to install and set up. another stage, very interesting is ton install a GENTOO, cause it show the differents stages of installation, compilation and customization of a linux system.

personnaly i use a Gentoo, it's stable and not very complicate to set up
