Skinning & Theming: Why Is It So Underestimated?

Found this article at OSNews.com - the author has somewhat of an interesting "defense" of skinning and some interesting metaphors for people that do it (us). I think it's worth the read. Also, I felt compelled to include one of the comments that I thought was hilarious:

Just try to match skins of sound card driver, video card driver, audio player, video player, browser and the system itself. No matter how much you try, your computer would be digital equivalent of a clown sipping Pepsi in Victorian armchair inside car factory production facilities. And if you add an instant messenging client into the pile, the clown in question would be listening to Death Metal "

Funniest thing I've heard all week! I think that a look may not be central to an OS, it plays a large part of it. Would you seriously enjoy browsing the web with a flashing neon green and vibrant pink browser? I doubt it. I think the industry as a whole has only very recently gotten the idea that Apple has pushed; The look is important.

Thats a really good analogy at the end, you were right daclothe(i was not doubting you). A very different analogy.
