I think whoever wrote that is a loser imo, first of all, note that it was written in 2001, As with mopst apple products they've improved a great deal since way back then.
I think the dock is great, it looks cool, easy to use, helpful, and a great asset to macs as it keeps the desktop nice and clean. Also the bug that is mentioned is now gone..

Some points are very well-put. That's why I use YzDock, but refuse to give up my start menu (I put it at the top and stay the hell away from ObjectBar). Best of both worlds.
I do, however, think that the author is just overreacting to change... my girlfriend had OS9 on her iBook when I met her, and I couldn't use the stupid thing. Now she has Jaguar, and it's loads easier. If the author really wanted a "power-user-friendly" OS, he should just have at a linux distro and leave the other OS's to the moms, grandmas, dads, and kids who have no idea what's really going on inside the crazy box.

I don't use OB either, but I use OD with the Start Menu docklet... I just don't see much point in continuing to use Y'z now that development is suspended. I'm not trying to bait flames, I understand that in many ways Y'z is superior, but OD will continue development for at least the near future, and there are better and better docklets available.

I still use Y'z because it now feels comfortable to me. I've tried Moby and OD but both feel "funny."
Anyway, I stil use the Start Menu because I like the notifications (the wireless connection notification is very helpful on my laptop), although I hide most of the icons. If there was a notifications docklet (wink,wink), I'd be all set to ditch the Start Menu completely.
I do enjoy my "windock" as a pleasant way to keep my desktop free of icons (my comp, my docs, trash,... yada yada).
On few points mentioned both the OS X dock and Y'z Dock do have downsides. The accidental hovering is one of them. If I could get all windows to not be able to cover a part of the screen (the part taken up by the dock), the hover problem would be solved.
The trash can... I have actually have been using the context menu to firstly delete files. I always keep my trash can docklet at the edge of my dock, so there is no problem.
I still can't understand the author's situation of icons apparently jumping around on his dock at random every time he adds a shortcut. I drag an icon on, plop it down where I want, it stays there until I feel the need to move it.

why?
its a rather dumb opinion. I find my object dock to be entirely useful. But opinions are opinions and running the risk of sounding like an open minded automaton the writer is entitled to his opinion.

The author of said article is a usability engineer - here's a link to his website.
just because you like the dock doesn't mean he doesn't make valid points though.
The dock has improved hugely since he wrote the article - especially with regards to task management.
What he stated about the icons changing position is relevant to usability engineers - it means that you can't build muscle memory for an icon position (which speeds the use of an application, because your body instinctively knows where it is). However, for your average joe this is far less of a problem, because they just don't care that much
None of the pc docks work quite like Mac OS X's .. which is a bit of a shame I guess.

Try the real thing before you say this article sucks, I will say the dock could use ALOT of work IMO, taskbar is still my favorite.
I think a good way to fix the problem of the tasks in the OSX dock rearranging the icons as they appear in random places would be to have them instead appear to the right of the shortcut icons next to the seperator (no not on the right of the seperator like moby\objectdock, that's where the minimized apps go, I mean to the left of the seperator between it and the shortcut icons). Then when you permenently add them, it'll appear to the left of those (task) icons.
It also happens to be my idea for either windows docks that have task areas, an option for that.
I don't find size as much of an issue as far as visibility of icons go but for people with bad eyesight I guess it could be bad.
I happen to think though that he does make a good point on the dock covering things so a lot of times people put it on auto hide, though.
I think the coolest OSX desktops are the ones that only use the dock for open applications, making it minimal and then having drag thing tabs on the side.
For those who wonder I have used all available docks. Some of what he says I still feel is personal preference. I know a few people who think that having a dock is easier than what was in MacOS before.
I like the dock... it's cool.
Drag Thing would be my favorite if it was for Windows... >.<

I was playing around on a friend's G3 iBook a few days ago and wow... the dock was super slow coming out of autohide and much less responsive to mouse movement than Y'z. The computer had just been restarted, no apps running either, so I don't know how to explain it really.
