Aqua-Soft ForumsI'm getting an iPod for christmas and I need to know if it will work with USB 1, on the site it says it requires USB 2. If it dosent then could you please give me some advice on what I need to buy for my PC.

usb 2 is backwards compatible with usb 1. It will just take longer to transfer your music between the two.
Oh, and you could go to best buy or something and buy a PCI USB adapter, probably find one for pretty cheap, i'm just guestimating, but i'd say $20 or less.

You might want to check... but as far as I know the USB2 cable is not included with the ipod; you have to buy it separately, only the firewire one is included with a 6 pin to 4 pin changer.
As long as you're in the market for a USB2 adapter for your computer, try and find a firewire/USB2 combo ... you might be able to kill 2 birds with one stone (by the way... if you use the firewire 6 pin connection your ipod will synchronize and charge when connected to your computer, if you use a firewire 4 pin it will only synchronize but not charge -- unless it has an external AC adapter).
I bought a 20GB 3G iPod yesterday the USB cable is NOT included.
The only cable included is a FireWire (IEEE 1394) Cable.
I suggest getting a Firwire port for your iPod, The transfer rate is much higher.
Also and Im not 100% sure on this but the iPod can only charge and transfer from the same USB port on a Mac. I heard that if you use firewire with a PC it will charge as well which is helpful as Ive heard alot of stories of iPod battery's dying in the middle of transferring which aint good news for the HD

Higher meaning it takes like 1 second to transfer a song with IEEE 1394 :naughty:
1. USB/FW combo cable is NOT included in the box, it costs $19 in Apple store

Get Firewire 800, that's the top of the line connector. Apple supplies the ipod without USB because all macs since the Blue and White G3 come with firewire, thus unknown to the average consumer, Apple is really trying to get more people to buy macs.

1. FW 800 is NOT backwards compatible (the connector is not the same)
2. iPod wouldn`t be able to use all that speed since it`s HD is spinning @ 4200 rpm so it`s kind of pointless to buy FW 800 (even FW 400 is too fast) :smartass:
Actually USB 2.0 is faster than FireWire 400.
USB 1.1 - 12Mbps = 0.9MB/s
USB 2.0 - 480Mbps = 60MB/s
FireWire 400 - 400Mbps = 50MB/s
FireWire 800 - 800Mbps = 100MB/s
USB 1.1 will work but file transfer times will be extremely, and I mean extremely, slow compared to Firewire or USB 2.0.
And to be able to do USB at all, you have to get the USB adapter from apple. Go look at their online store.
AND yes, USB does not charge at the same time. Go buy a firewire card at best buy or something.

That is the theoretical top speed of USB 2.0 however it is a host based protocol whereas Firewire is a hostless peer to peer networking protocol.
You will not get that top speed because USB depends heavily upon the CPU of the host.
True... USB 2.0 rarely, if ever transfers data at 480 Kbps.
I can attest that it will beat FW400 thought for normal file transfer.
I have a USB/FW external HD and when I use the USB connector, it does move files faster than the FW connection.
And this is on my 500Mhz G3 iBook.
I did some testing of the iPod over USB2
Seems pretty damn fast for me
/dev/sda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 1392 MB in 2.00 seconds = 696.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 56 MB in 3.10 seconds = 18.06 MB/sec
Edit: Tested using FW400, much slower
/dev/sdb:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 1352 MB in 2.00 seconds = 676.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 34 MB in 3.01 seconds = 11.30 MB/sec
