It's given that WB is slower than visual styles, but some WB skins looks awesome and WB can skin more programs than VS. When you look in under "settings" in the WB dialogue, there's an option for "hyperpaint".
Exactly what does hyperpaint do and what settings are optimal for what kinda of machine/desktop/colordepth/resolution?
I have a thunderbird 1.133GHz and GF3 Ti500. What would be an optimal setting for me? Windows XP.
First, disable the "themes" service for Windows if you use WB, it only uses resources. The resources are used even if you dont have them activated - no wonder WB must use more resources. if you have WB, you use the themes resources AND the WB resources.
Second, have a look at stardocks site i.e. Windowblinds. There are a few docs to talk about the options you have, like hyüperpaint etc.

Go to run, type services.msc. Then scroll down and locate it. Double click, and set it to disabled if you don't ever plan on using visual styles or manual if you just want it to kick in when you need it.
I still have to get confirmation on this but I feel that that is the loading .exe for visual styles just as wbload.exe is the loading .exe for WB skins.
They both communicate with uxtheme.dll.
