The fan on the GPU on my ATI Radeon 9000 has been making noise for a couple of months now. It is VERY LOUD. I am amazed that a small fan like that can make so much noise. Am I going to trash the card by disable the fan?
Can I Disable The Fan On My Graphics Card?
You might >.![]()
You could buy a better fan or radiator or even water-cooling system. I wouldn't reccomend removing it entirely, processors in modern gpu cards are very hot. In 9000 too, unfortunately.
My 9000 is quiet, let's make it clear.
you might be able to take it off, but i dont recomend it because GPU heatsinks with fans are generaly crappy. What i did was snip the fan wires and attacheda a 60mm CPU fan on it with thoes zip ties. Its much quiter then the stock one and it cools like twice as good, gets realy dusty tho..
They also make replacment ones > http://svc.com/chipsetcoolers1.html
jam a fork in it
My computer (9800 Pro!!11) is loud...does anyone else recomend replacing the fan?
i had a fan go on an nvidia last year, and a couple of weeks later(i kept using it, i didn't give a "mr. hankey") i had to replace the card because it failed. I can't even remember if i fried it or it just slowly stopped working, but whatever.
coincidentally enough, i replaced it with a 9000.
Zalman's VGA Coolers works great for a lot of graphic cards, including the newer Radeons.
But if there's anybody out there thinking of buying a new card, buy a Sapphire card. They have passive cooling on A LOT of cards, including Radeon 9800XT AIW. Keep an eye on the Ultimate-series and you will see what I mean.
Great cards, and best of all: Dead silent! (Y)

if you want it to be quiter i would. I think zalman makes a nice big heat[pipe coolers thats cooled by a big slow quiet highairflow 80mm fan on top. Its like 25$ tho, but if you have the $$ to fork over for a 9800pro, i doubt youll have much of a problem with 25$
I'll think about if I need a pipe cooler, then if I do, I'll try to get one cheaper, if not (cheaper), just a fan
Oh yea did I mention how unbelievably loud it is?
get an ultra-quiet case
i cant remember the exact web-site but they are pretty cheap.....
and uh...dont disable it unless you feel like either:
A. Cooking eggs on the top of your case
B. Setting your house on fire
or C. Seeing smoke pour out of the case.
Burning plastic smells like crap!
