Do You Own A PDA? Which Model?

PocketPCs can natively work with office files without any problems or conversion. I use my Powerpoint files and it can even play the correct transitions. I use the bluetooth on my Sony Ericcson T68i phone and pda to communicate so that they can access each other's data aside from browsing, chat and email. My battery lasts for 10 hours before it needs a recharge. I'm into classic games so I use Mame aside from the various emulators available. I prefer to write in natural script and the software recognizes my handwriting easily. I can skin it to look and feel like WindowsXP, aqua or whatever (Including radio and check buttons). Animated desktops is easy. Can play Windows Media files aside from AVI, DIVX, Mpeg and MP3. Oh did I say my batteries lasts for 10 hours before I need to recharge? :woot: (But then again, I got this b/w palm that can last days before I need to charge )

Zodiac looks like something I've been waiting for but it's still not available. I hope it isn't vaporware.

Edit: I've just looked into that Kinoma Producer. You have to convert your files first to be compatible with the Kinoma. The available PocketPC software can play the formats I mentioned without any conversion.

And here I thought that PDA-platform disputes were confined to the PDA sites. FWIW, _neither_ platform handles native files well when using anything beyond basic formatting. On the Palm platform, DocsToGo handles roundtripping much better than native on either platform when it converts back and forth using its conduit and own format.

I am pretty sure you chose Powerpoint because PocketPC messes up office files. Yes, you can view them on your handheld, but they get messed up in doing so. I have been to some pages including Brighthand and native handling and keeping the files in native state is a Palm-only thing, sorry. You probably don't notice conversion when you are at a PC that has an accordin syncing program, i.e. the desktop equivalent (not Office itself), but there is conversion. DocsToGo handles the files natively and does not alter it in any way (unless you make changes to the file or choose to alter anything, of course). PowerPointis available as DocToGo file format. QuickOffice lets view these files natively, and you can save any edit as QuickOffice files for conversion into Office file formats.

I'm into classic games so I use Mame aside from the various emulators available.

For arcade emuation, Palm got Xcade.

The new, enhanced Graffitti 2 system comes pretty close to handwriting recognition. If you need true handwriting recognition, there are numerous tools out there for it, like TealScript.

I can skin it to look and feel like WindowsXP, aqua or whatever (Including radio and check buttons).

Take Palmtheme, does the same job.

I forgot to mention DivX with MMplayer on Palm, true. No conversion necessary there for the codecs. Is "Windows media files" an advantage or a disadvantage?? Id go for the latter. Still PocketPC plays no Quicktime, which Kinoma canhandle for you. MMplayer can do H263, and a dozen of other formats is planned.

Thats nothing special. Palm owners can USE the palm and have to recharge after 10 hours Seriously, the palm models have a wide range from weeks to hours in battery usage, depending on your needs).

You still havent said anything about the screen (Palm: up to 480x320 vs 240x320 PocketPC.)

Please don't misunderstand me. I dont want to bash the PocketPC platform, though it probably looks like I want to. I just tell you why I simply cannot see a reason to buy one.

Hey, Amiga and C64 have no peers. They were ahead of their time... it's just that they got tangled with unfortunate marketing management.

The Newton was ahead of its time but the technology took longer to catch up.

The Palm was a "just in the nick of time" product.

The PocketPC is Bill Gates trying to take over again.

Sharp Zaurus? Now THAT is a cool linux pda.

480 x 320? I can still read the browser text with 640 x 480... (barely though)

Frankly, Palm hardware has finally caught up and the software available for both platforms are very similar. Now it just comes to a matter of styling, cost and available options.

Tell you what, when someone comes out with a fast Amiga emulator for a PDA, I'll be the first to buy it whether it is palm based or ce based.

Actually PictPocket Cinema can handle Quicktime on the PocketPC just fine, as well as various other formats (Windows Media Video, Streaming .ASF, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI).

It can't do it with the built-in stuff, no. However...

I just am afraid we would need 640x400 screen to *really* enjoy that. And that would efinitely make the devie WAY too large. But, who knows...

Right now, PalmSource licensees are not only making the best PDAs on the market, but they're taking the PDA concept into new and exciting areas.

Well, it's hard to tell by pictures how big it is, but that (relatively) new Sharp Zaurus clamshell has a 640x480 display.

That zaurus is an interesting device, but not (officially) marketed outside Japan, and it really is a lot bigger (i.e. thicker) and heavier than the Palm T|3 or an Axim.

Plus software issues, etc etc...

I think Sharp is making the same mistake again which the Japaese companies made in the mid/end-80ies when they did not market impressive systems like the FM Towns or the X68000 etc. outside Japan...

As such, the Zaurus will become a pure niche market / device. Stupid Sharp.

i have a palm tungsten v2 with a 512mb secure digital memory card.

its absolutely great and integrates perfectly with my new powerbook 15" superdrive + sony ericsson z600. i must say that i love the way these units work together with bluetooth. controlling each unit and using my t2 to work the mobile instead of having to use the small buttons on it.
