Apple has traditionally made it difficult for users to change the way their desktops look beyond the superficial. In Panther, for example, users can change the blue jelly of Aqua to grey, but that's more or less the extent of customization. A Wired article about "skinning" OS X notes that the look of OS X has changed slightly since its introduction; "The system's overall appearance has gone from the fruity look of Aqua to the metallic look of Panther. Apple is skinning everyone's desktop according to Steve Jobs' taste."
Jobs' whims aren't enough for some users. ShapeShifter, a utility created by Unsanity, allows Mac users to dramatically change the way OS X looks. The Unsanity website says "You don't wear the same clothes every day, why should the computing interface you use every day be any different?" But ShapeShifter isn't without issues; any major update to the operating system can result in conflicts and instability.
The Wired article also notes that Windows suffers from similar issues related to skinning, though Microsoft has built a "theme" framework into Windows XP.

What do you guys think? Skinning Apple applications has never been easy. (Consider iTunes for Windows. 
) Does this mean that any efforts to skin the Mac will be continually twarted by the new system updates Apple provides?
