Address Book Suggestion

Hello everybody :)

I would like to get some points of view from all of you.

My current Address Book stored data in text file (addresse.dat, groups.dat) whereas MacOS address book stores cards directly in vCard format

I think it could be a good idea to do so because :

- I could handle vCards directly without no import (and then more fields could be handle, such as birthday, and so on....)

- photos would be integrated directly in vCard (I've managed to incorporate photo in vcard already, in Base64 format) resulting in a clean

- I could solve minor problems, such as associating a card to multiple groups, and associate a company card to any group (not possible in current version)

- you could have multi-lines in Notes field

- It would be 100% MacOS-conforming lol

- .... other things I forgot

But it will change everything for you, you'll need to export your data to vcards before using such a new system...

and I need to code a lot of things (but that's my concern lol)

Hope everybody will give his point of view

either way is great. I mean you have given us the best "aqua-app" to date. However, from the list of things you just posted, I would say the vCards are the way to go. Just having the pictures integrated is better let alone having more fields. I don't know how long it would take to re-write some of the code but the vCards sound incredible to me.

#87494

hey that wld be nice JIb..

u have done a marvellous job so far..

eh anyway, is it just me or is it possible to resize the program?

i cant seem to resize it..

#87497

I'd suggest moving to straight vCard format as well.

Thanks for your hard work, Jib!

#87499

An excellent idea Jib. This would make your perfect app more perfect :)

Yeah, if you move to vCard it's enough incentive for me to spend a couple of hours doing the transfer from my internet mail address book. vCard is the way to go. Good idea, Jib.

#87509

Hi Jib! Got to agree with everyone so far! Really one of the greatest piece of aqua applications I have came across.

I think everyone's got really good ideas, and especially the one which Pe7er suggested on the mouse wheel support. Might as well utilise the capabilities of the system, isn't it?

BTW, do you think it would be possible to use some highlighting, or colour coding the different profiles belonging to different groups? So that on the global list, we can see at a glance who belongs to where and so on so forth... :shy:

Just a thought. ;)

GREAT WORK ANYWAYS! :who's your daddy:

#87519

I vote vCards !!

#87686

I vote vCards also ! (although it means a lot of re-coding work for our friend !)

:-)

#87709

yeah that means a lot of re-coding, but I hope a new better Address Book :)

I've already started to work on vcards system, and it will be ok (currently, only one third is achieved, that means a lot of things are broken)

Otherwise, I can't cutomize highlighted color in cards list.... (per-system setting)

#87716

i vote for vCard, simply because it seems like it will make the the program more powerful and functional. the current installment (beta 2) is just wonderful, and i believe that many people here would agree that it will hold us over for some time if you choose to incorporate vCards. From your last post, Jib, it sounds like vCard is already on its way, and so let me be the first to give a little encouragement!

i have no doubt that this will only make your wonderful program even better.

maybe someone could work seperately on a conversion tool for the dat files to turn the data into Vcards?

You could use Export to vcard in my Address Book, if you don't have so much cards.

Otherwise, I you are lazy, you could export to CSV, then import in Windows Address Book, and then drag and drop recently-imported cards in a folder (select them all) ; it will convert them all to vcards.

I hope also to have Import CSV as soon as possible.

#87881

sadly, tho, I have over 100 entries

#87921

How did you get them all in there? Did you manually type them in Duckie, or import them? I have a lot of contacts as well, but it is worth it to me to re import all the files so the new and improved address book can be more efficient.

Josh

I typed them all from scratch

I dont keep an address book within WAB (Windows Address Book) because if I were ever lucky enough to get a virus, I'm not stupid enough to have an address book full of potentials who could also get it.

Oh, and I was using the old Address Book. It doesnt import.

Just to let you know that the new system ofstorage is really advanced and should be finished in a couple of days...

I hope Beta3 to be better than never :P

Look a these new features :

* Data are stored directly in vCard format

* New fields : Department, work homepage, birthday, gender

* Cards can be associated to many groups

* Company cards can be associated to a group

* Settings are all saved to Registry (no more 'Options.ini')

* 'Print card' new feature, with Print preview and customizable fonts & colors

* Groups and cards panes can be resized (like in original Address Book)

* Search : show first result as soon as you type something (no need to press enter, search results are automatically refreshed)

* Personal data are now stored outside your install folder (Application Data system-folder by default, but you can customize this folder)

* New hotkey : F1 for Help

* New guide texts for Job Title, Company and Department fields

* Sort cards by First or Last name (set this option in Preferences dialog)

* You can set display name as "First name Last name" or "Last name First name" (in Preferences dialog)

* Preferences dialog : browse for folder now offers 'Create a new folder' option

* Preferences dialog : new option-group 'phone'

* Preferences dialog : define your preferred email client

* Preferences dialog : define which email is used by default when sending group mails

and following bugs are fixed :

* At start-up, 'All' system-group can't be renamed anymore

* 'Check for new version' window background is now brushed

* When you click on the cross in search bar and your cards list is empty, app does not crash anymore

* Note field : full content is shown (and not truncated) and multi-lines support

* Import vCard : solved some problems with Notes and Addresses

* Send email to a group : blank emails are not added to the list anymore (resulting in unwanted ",")

* Notify 'Me' Card changes : blank emails are not added to the list anymore, and message text is properly formatted

* At startup, text cursor is not blinking on name field anymore

* Send mail to a group was broken

And I'll correct more bugs before releasing beta3

Hope you'll enjoy :P

Thanks so much for the updates!

I see that the most useful update in this upcoming version shall be the vCard compatibility!!!

Thanks again Jib. (Y)

[Edit] Didn't notice this initially, but now we can sort our contacts based on first and last names as well! And how they are displayed... >. CHEERS!

#88292

Yuppie! I hated that cursor, you know it  (Y)

/edit: damn people I can't believe in those bugs. This app has NEVER crashed for me yet. It must have been your fault, not Jib's ;)

/edit2: Gosh  it's my post No 666!
