Aqua-Soft ForumsI`ve got a notebook w/ an ethernet and i bought an ethernet card for my old PC. Both r XP (notebook is SP1, PC is not) installing the card in PC went fine after that i treid the network wizard but i just can`t get the other comp to show in my network places (I DID TELL THE GUY who made the cable that it`s going to be 2 comps directly connected without a switch so i guess it`s not the cable`s fault). I shared files on both machines but i can`t get, on either of comps, anything to show in my network places (i get an icon in sys tray with 2 comps but there`s no activity, there is also a LAN connection in connect to folder which is connected) So could some1 point me to a step by step guide (tried google, got bunch of crap) (also read the thread i found on AS but it wasn`t helpful) or write some for me. Thanks :shy:

You could have several problems...
Are you running XP Pro or Home?
XP Home sucks for just about any type of networking functionality other than surfing the internet.
XP Pro requires that you have an IP address configured.
Doesn't matter if it's entered manualy or through DHCP, but you must have a valid IP address.
Remember that NetBUI protocol doesn't exist anymore so you need an IP address.
That auto-configured IP address POS that is provided doesn't work most of the time for sharing.
You may also want to run ipconfig /all from the command line and see if the auto configured addresses on each computer is different.
It may also be the cable.
You may also want to buy a true crossover cable to test.
If it works, then it was the cable. If it doesn't, you can always take the cable back.
Home and Pro should be able to recognize eachother and have simple network. DHCP is used for Server-Client based network (that is why companies are urged to get Pro), but he just want, I am assuming, a bus network (a connection to each computers files).
You don't even see a loacl network in My Network Places?

i had auto-configured IPs but it wouldn`t work.
How do i configure them manually? :shy:
@ wiz - i just want a simple network (P2P like) just so i can use my desktops huge 120+80gb hard drives, i would just need to copy some files from desktop to naotebook. from time to time.
i guess i`ll hv to keep on searching!

To resolve this issue, make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is turned on and the Computer Browser service is running on each computer in the workgroup. To do this, follow these steps.
Step 1: Turn On NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet Connections.
Click Network Connections.
Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
Click the WINS tab.
Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK two times.
Click Close to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
Close the Network Connections window.
Step 2: Start the Computer Browser Service
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
In the console tree, expand Services and Applications.
Click Services.
In the right details pane, verify that the Computer Browser service is started, right-click Computer Browser, and then click Start.
Close the Computer Management window.
for good faith, i'd make sure they're both in the same workgroup.
