Hi all.
I should really ask the folks at work this one, but its the weekend and i have to put an order in soon...
If you had a choice of new GFX card at the moment (with a budget of up to £200), what would you get? I have been looking at a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT with 256 Mb RAM, or a Radeon 9800SE All In Wonder with 128 Mb... Any other ideas?

i would recommend an nvidia, i dont care what the tests say, i still like them better than ATI

I'd like to recommend the Nvidia 5700 ultra. I picked one up from best buy today. Its a really great card for the money. Under 200 bucks after small rebate.
Go to newegg.com and search for a radeon 9500 pro if its still there. It's performance is better than a 9600.
Am in the UK so Newegg isnt a possibility, unfortunately.
I'm deliberately staying clear of nVidia cards... Overpriced for what you get now i think. Has anyone seen anything of the Radeon 9800 SE? I looked at one on the net... but havent seen any reviews, and we havent had any review copies at the magazine that i know of...
Looks like it might be that 256Mb 9600 XT for now....

Get an all in wonder! They do everything and anything you want and the new ati cards are all very powerful in directx 9. All in wonders are high priced though, but worth it.
Pretty much everything I've read says that paying for 256MB on a vid card is a waste... You just don't see any performance increases, and in some cases, performance actually decreases with the addition of the extra memory. See reviews like this one at tomshardware.com:

Yeah, I've heard the same thing! Something to do with the memory on the card not being fast enough or something? I would say, just to be safe, go with the 9800 pro AIW with 128mb if you want the best of the best and all the features. Ive heard a lot of good things about the 9600 aiw pro too. Its more "bang for your buck" supposedly, sensibly priced when compared to the faster radeon cards, but you still get very good performance in directx 9.
yeah, slower memory is used on the 256mb ones, but my friend tells me that the xt versions use the same memory (speed-wise) as the 128mb ones, though i'm not sure.
in any case, yeah, i think the best buy right now is a radeon 9600.
ati...happy whit my all in wonder i remeber when i bought it, i wasnt that sure and...the best buy i could made...whort!!! maybe you couldn't see it now but in the future you will be happy
go with the 9600xt like you were thinking, great performance for price, and the auto overclocking feature is cool. :rule:
