Panther On Older Imac
is it the really old ones with the power button on the keyboard that come with os 8.6 (the first genereation) or the second generation which features a slot cd drive and no power button on the keyboard and only comes in one color (blue)
OS X 10.1 is usable on the first imacs, with the power on the keyboard, but it ain't fun.
With the added speed in panther, who knows... It will also eat up a huge percentage of his HD space, unless he replaced it.
Yeah It'll work. My Girlfriend's got a 1st gen iMac that has Jaguar on it now. Granted it's a bit slow but not so much that I wouldn't recommend it. My guess is that Panther might be slightly more taxing on an aging machine, however I think it's a beautiful upgrade to an awesome OS.

Er...
My brother has an iMac. It's a slot loading one in pink with a power button on the keyboard and runs OS9.

Any Mac shown on that page can install Panther.

I saw that page and I realize that I can install it, but will it run at an acceptable rate is my question.

As long as you have sufficient RAM and hard drive space, yes, it'll run fine. Maybe look into maxing out the RAM.

My friend has a slot loading indigo one (no power button on keyboard) and it runs jaguar just fine.
It's a 333MHz g3, 256mb ram, 20gb hd. A bit slow, but it works.
