What Kinda Performance Do You Get

i was thinking about this today. i notice that my system seems a little different after i use some of these system files that have been posted here. well i should say with all of them. i dont want someone to think that someone here is handing out bad mods, but proformance seems to go down some. then you add all these other progies like wb ob mobydock yz dock yz bar ect (i dont use to many of these).

i like to play some games here and there but manyly i like to work on graphics for the youth group that i am a youth pastor for, so i look to get a lot of bang for my buck on hardware.

i guess what i am saying has anyone noticed any of the same things that i have? is there a better way to do this, other then buying a mac (some wise guy was going to say it). i like my pc but are progies like iphile as good as it sounds, replacing icons without hacking dll files? is there a way that mac mod and still have the proformace that we do after a clean install of xp?

my system is AMD XP 1900+ (palimeno core  ) 2X 40 gig hard drives (one on a converter to sata) ATI Rad 9000 pro 64 meg, 1 gig pc 2100 crusial ram on dual channels (i know alittle on the slow side, and its all the same brand and speed) i have it all setup for some over clocking with a few extra fans, a thermaltake valcano 7+ but i havent gone that way yet. and i also have all the normal stuff too, zip drive and cd burner.

it comes down to it can you have your cake and eat it too.

Thanks

Sebek

sorry if this is posted in the wrong area.

I say if you like to play games then hav a separete account on XP that does not have the misc progs (dock, ob, etc...) loading and just have a simple background. MSStyles should not cause any problems, it would be the same if you used Luna. And the DLL's should not have that much effect on your preformance.

its just little things like a hicup here and there that i didnt have before replacing dlls. i run a pretty clean system but i guess it could just be me.

thanks wiz

Well, If I am running lots of gdesklets, my system drags. Those things eat up CPU.

Other than that, everything runs fine. No skins would slow things down, and things like expocity (expose for metacity), rhythmbox(itunes clone), etc are all "built in".

I can play UT2003 just fine without turning anything off. I get 40FPS on my Geforce4MX440.

#86290

i haven't noticed any slowdowns or anything after swapping files.

what i don't use are a lot of appearance programs like y'z shadow. i'm perfectly fine with just having a visual style and modded system files, no need for fancy effects.

why am i not suprised with contra`s (hidden) advice on switching to Linux :D

but he`s right, once i get the know-how i`ll switch to Linux (or Mac  )

but the things u mentioned shouldn`t slow down ur sys

just ask mine P3 700, 256 no name SDRAM, ATI 7000 SE (crippled) and 40 (5400) + 80 (7200) machine ;):)

i have a similar system to you sebek(a bit slower cpu, one step up graphics card), and i've noticed that my system is smooth except:

if i've used a modded system file that has image files that are too large(filesize)

i'm using object bar and its a bit clunky

using mobydock, and i need to restart it periodically as vmemory usage goes insane.(i got 250mb just from md today, harhar it doesn't like photoshop multiple image manipulation).

i use windowblinds/mobydock/kkmenu/winfx/objectbar/yztoolbar. I don't bother with systemfile mods anymore(besides removing 'address'). oh yeah, i use iconpackager once to set my icons for each account then its not turned on so it doesn't really count. :canadian:

#86339

i don't notice much/any performance hit.

using object dock, windowsfx, yztoolbar, iconpackager, and msstyle.

my system is 3 yrs old too, well the cpu is. i have dual p3 800 and radeon 9600.

#86356

like i said it could just be me. sometimes i do that, see things that arent there. i tell ya what though that windows file protection thing is about the drive me nuts i see about 3 times a day.

thanks for helping me see that i'm just a little off the edge here

you shouldn't see it at all. how did you replace the files and which ones did you replace?

i've replaced uxtheme.dll and shell32.dll and i almost never see the dialog. very rarely will it pop up.

#86385

yeah, i installed a bloated shell32.dll and the only time it popped up was on install of office(wouldn't let me install it) and maybe another msprog(cna't remember).

use a CMD script like i do!

here's an example when of my shortcut to play quake3

you can mod it to your needs. Then you can make a similar script but the inverse, i mean for run all stuff

here ya go ;)

I use a pretty wallpaper, ObjectDock, Desktop X and I customize a few of my desktop icons.

To answer your question, yes.....my system slows down considerably when I use these items.

If I really want to fly and get work done quickly, I close OD, DT X and choose "Windows Classic" via the appearance tab and use the standard Windows taskbar. When doing this, I notice a huge difference.

BTW.....if you're interested, I have a 2.53 p4, gig of RAM, nVidia ti4600 graphics card and a HD that's about 50% full.

my system is a xp2500, 512 ddr2700 ram, 2x40gb hard drives and a rad9600 pro. i have modded system files, obar, samurize, nice background and msstyles theme. the only time i notice a slowdown is when i turn on yz shadow. then it hangs a lot more. otherwise performance is great! even in games. although i have to configure object dock so it doesnt stay on top!

#88728

I have a P4 2.8Ghz w 1.5Gb Ram and I dont notice any slow down only when loading and "magnifying" the dock at the same time

When I use big progs such as games I notice the game slow down when using all the "Aqua" apps

The best advice has been given... use seperate accounts I have 5 accounts just to myself, One is a Mac account which has all the dock and things in the startup and theres another that has abaolutley nothing done not even a wallpaper for things like games and 3DSM and when I use that the speed of my musheen soars past the Mac account.

My advice use a "empty" account for games, graphic apps etc...

I run WB4, DesktopX2, WindowFX2, and ObjectDock . No performance difference to not running them to be honest.

I only need to remember to quit the dock for some games and all is good :)

#88787

all the RAM usage indicators I use show I have extremely high RAM usage. here's a pic of running applications and above the dock is the physmem usage.

I've got 512mb RAM and if you add all the mem in the task manager up, it equals 188mb

188/512= 36.7% is being used

the physmem meter says 73% is being used, so what's the deal?

#97005

well, afaik DLL's are fully loaded to the memory, and modded dll's are usually a lot bigger than the original ones because the icon sizes.

for example, a regular shell32.dll is 9MB if i remember right, and my one is around 20MB. so here goes 11MB of RAM :P

#97078

Mine's celeron 2.4G ,256MB DDR 333, 80G ATA 100 hard Disk,using GeForce MX440 8X, and 52X CD-RW & 16x DVD-ROM.

I use AquaMod (Replace my system files :P ), Y'z Dock, ObjectBar+Panther skin,

WindowsBlinds+Panther Skin, Style XP+Iceman's Jaguar Theme.Iconpackerager,and...er....and.......

It works ferfectly, very steady!rarely crash...

except some aboutbox, that's CPU-eating and also RAM-eating :shy: !!!
