How-to Change Default Shell32 Icons?

Firstly, I's like to big up all the mod masters that have loaded the likes of shell32 with some real icons (namely OS X's).

I'd like to be able to switch some of the icons loaded in shell32 with different 'default' ones (like for the "Trash", "Network", etc.). If I use Window$ method (i.e. desktop info, change icons). After restart the modified shell32 ones reload.

I know WB can do this with its method but I find it clunky on this particular system (not a fan of loaded a bunch of sh*t on top of an already crappy OS).

did you mod shell32.dll yourself? if you did, make sure you edit a copy of the file, and not the file itself, or else you won't be able to save it (it's in use). that is, make a copy of the file, and edit that one, then do the replacement.

and how did you replace them? manually via safe mode? killing explorer?

i recommend that you use replacer, as it will automatically replace the file in all locations (including backup folders) and deal with windows file protection while also creating a backup.

finally, make sure you rebuild the icon cache. run tweakui and go to repair icons.

and make sure the cd isn't in the drive.

I didn't re-mod shell32.dll yet. I used the mod version available on this board with the installer.

I need to know which app is best to do the re-mod.

I replaced my shell32.dll file with replacer and a couple days later it reverted back to default somehow

to re-hack the file, use resource hacker or restorator. it's not hard at all to do, but it's very tedious.

as for using replacer to swap files, i did that and i haven't had problems with it. tell us more about your situation, and maybe we can figure out what's wrong, machinehed.

Oh, the reason why it probably reverted back to the original is because of your Windows File Protection cache that's located in your "C:\Windows\System32\dllcache" folder. If you delete those files then you won't have to worry about anything changing back.

Just be sure not to put in your WinXP CD bc at times it will copy the cache back to the dllcache folder. If you have your WinXP CD, and ever need to use WFP in order to restore files, then you can just use the CD and the "SFC /SCANNOW" line in the cmd prompt instead of having all that cache on your hard drive and wasting space.

Also, here's another way of replacing system files (just incase you haven't heard of this method):

Right click the taskbar (or press Ctrl+Alt+Del), click Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab, click on explorer.exe and click End Process. Then click, File...New Task. In the browser window find the file you want to use to replace whatever system file you want. Right click on it, either click cut or copy, and go to the folder in which the system file you want to replace is at. You can try to just paste it and let it over write the system file but if it doesn't then just rename the system file to whatever and then paste the file. There you go, hope it helps you.

use replacer to overcome having to close explorer and then paste and replace the file in dll cache and so on... do a quick search on google and youll find it on the first few results , i had never had problems with it either.

You only have to double click replacer.exe then drag the original file, press enter, and then drag the replacee (yes i have invented this term , oh, the joy of not having english as a motehr language, you can come up wioth funky words easier ).

Or you could just replace the dllcache file aswell. Obviously renaming the orig as a .bak file first (just in case)

I usually have 2 windoz installed in my harddisk. I use one windoz to replace the default windoz system files on the other windoz. Or you can use windoz recovery console to replace them. If so, don't forget to copy your moded shell32 into drive c becoz recovery console only copy files that was placed in drive c (btw all files must be placed in root directory and you can't use wildchar to copy).
