Have you tried just connecting ethernet cables between the two? Shouldn't that just work?
Be sure to have "windows file sharing" turned on.

tried the ethernet cables. How do you I turn sharing on, and where should I go on my Powerbook to find the shared files?
unless you use a crossover cable, simply connecting the two together wouldn't work.
Need more info like:
what kind of internet connection do you have?
operating systems on both machines?
budget?
parts on hand?
For sharing files and internet connection between your mac and our pc get a hub.
connect the hub to your modem and your pc and your mac.
Share the folders or drives in your pc.
and access them from the finder in your mac.
And for share your mac files to your pc
Turn sharing on in your mac
the system gives you an address to access from your pc.

I always connect my ibook and pc.. You don't need a crossover cable. This is what you do. Plug in the ethernet cable to the pc and powerbook. Now make sure no firewall is on in xp. Also don't forget to turn on file sharing in xp. Go to the powerbook and open up finder. Go to View - Customize Toolbar and add the Connect icon to Finder. Press connect and your powerbook should automatically find your Windows XP PC

But yes, you will need a "crossover" cable. A normal cat5 connects to a hub, or router, which reverses the signal. If you use a normal cat5 neither computer will see the other. Luckily, I we have our cable guy make us crossovers. I have about 5 crossover cables going throughout my apartment because I'm too cheap to buy a router. i'm not 100% sure you could buy a crossover cable at something like best buy, but I would imagine you could. For a lot more. I got a 50ft crossover cable for the laptop (aka portable porn machine.) If your Windows box is the internet host, just inable Internet Connection sharing. Your Ibook should then pull it's IP through DHCP, and after that, you can write down your settings and statically define it's IP if you don't want it to change. I have a daisy chain of 5 pc's all with "internet connection sharing." Each one has to have it's Connection sharing IP with a different class C subnet. I have 192.168.1 192.168.2* .etc....
PS: As i've never had a OSX* computer. I don't know for sure. But I am very familar with freebsd. what I do is statically define each's IP address. Then go to my hosts file (XP C:\%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) and give each it's own name. That way I can (vnc frontroombox)
