AXILAXIS Icon Workshop, not free, but wort the price
Axialis IconWorkshop is the best icon program available.
Realy easy to use - right click on a file and click convert to icon, and yet so powerful. I recomend for anyone. (Y)
I'll put in a good word for Axialis Icon Workshop also - it's really easy to use and very powerful. I've converted hundreds of icons from Mac/ICO to PNG and vice-versa in a snap. It's worth buying.
i'll third that: IconWorkshop is mana from icon heaven.
in addition, an essential (for me) piece of freeware often mentioned around the forums is @iconsushi.
Lion Tech IconShop
It reads Mac icons and converts between a few formats (tiff, ico, cur, bmp). Plus it's free.
Tip #1: Unlike Axialis IconWorkShop, in IconShop you don't have to rename icon file to .icns
Tip #2: Drag a folder to the IconShop window, and you can instantly see all icons in this folder and its subfolders.

I'm using Iconworkshop, and I don't rename the icons extracted from Mac sit files to icns before converting them to ico format.

yeah, you're right Hush66, and also, IconWorkshop handles drag and dropping folders no problem, i drag folders full of mac icons from the desktop directly into IW all the time, and all the icons are viewable. sorry ken, we don't know what you're talking about. still, i will check out this other app you mention. thanks.
When I use IconWorkShop internal explorer to browse for icons, files with no extension do not appear at all.
I see those files (without any extension) fine with the Iconworkshop Explorer. Just to check, do you have the "Show Program Files" option check. It's the 15th option of the Iconworkshop Explorer toolbar.
I'm going to go nuts.
We just posted this, and we've all provided apps with our personal opinions. but yet STILL someone asked this question in a different post :S

if i just want to convert from one format to another (gif, bmp, ico, png, jpg, etc.), i use irfanview... to me, it's the best graphic viewer (+ it's free!!!! and can handle audio & video)... and with all the plugins, there's not that many files it can't view or save as. (not sure about mac formats, though?? <_< )

Because of Ken's post, I dl'ed it and played with it for a bit. Considering it's freeware, you can't complain. It seems to handle everything no problem. But it's interface and overall feel are pretty sterile and unintuitive. With Infranview some people might have similar complaints, true. But I would pay for Infranview (not a lot, but still, I'd pay). If I had to pay for IconShop I would definitely choose IW or Microangelo. (Sorry to diss your recommendation Ken, no offense.) One more thing, again, this is not to flame or anything, just more info about why I love IW: it offers extensive and reliable shell customizing options... reducing the need for manual hacks. Still one more thing we forgot to mention is the essential need for Stuffit Expander for unpacking Apple archives.

Hope that will help people choose the program that they require or see fit.
