haha dec 17!!! It premieres in my home town of WELINGTON, NZ.. so we see it a bit earlier than the rest of the world... 
they're doing an all nite movie marathon, with the extended editions of all 3 movies (so its about 13 hours of LOTR, including intermissions). At Wellington Airport, a massive model of Gollum is up on the roof. to greet visitors, and the Cave Troll is downtown somewhere...

I already have tickets for the midnight showing CST.
The lucky guys are the ones that get this deal.
Two weeks before RotK they release FotR Extended in Theatres and runn it for two weeks. A week before RotK, they release tTT Extended in theatres. And the day before RotK, theatres align the FotR and tTT (both Extended) back to back and as soon as tTT is done, it will be 11pm and theatres can start RotK. Theatres have top get permission so they can start releases an hour before the next day. This is only happening in less than 100 theatres nation wide (US), only one here in STL, but I won't be in town.

For those not familiar with New Zealand, its biggest city has 1.2 million people or thereabouts living in it. Some facts about this city :
1.It is called Auckland.
2.Auckland is a hole.
3.Everyone who doesnt live in Auckland doesnt like Auckland.
4.So, congruent with the whole middle-earth thing, we've dubbed it Orcland.

I don't think I'll go to the cinema to see this. I was totally devastated and disappointed with 'The Two Towers'. It's a long talk....Mr Jackson is a total asshole to me. He made very fast earning superproduction which has very little to do with the book. $$$$....

All things considered, you have to admit it goes as close to the book as is possible while still being different enough to be a good mainstream film. I think he's done an excellent job.
And I don't. It's too far from the book for me - some characters are simplified and stupid - Gimli for example.
I hate the music, which in terms of classical music is a chaos (I bet this guy never heard John Williams or some classical creator).
I hate the photography and the work of camera which are so "naughty word"ing primitive - you can clearly see that Mr Jackson was doing b-class horror movies for all his life.
LOTR is a typical hollywood superproduction. Its look was created by the producers, not Mr Jackson or the fans. In every scene I see moneeey that decided how these movies look today. It's sad that every piece of art today becomes a consumer good that is meant to be sold.
Oh, and I hate Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. But it's highly subjective opinion 
why do you hate VIggo Mortensen?? Whats wrogn with that? that is how i pictured Aragon while reading the books!

According to books he should be a really BIG man, not a wimp like Viggo. And what I hate about him the most is his hair (when wet) and his voice (when he's speaking loudly on the Rivendell conference) :rants:

I'm actually from Napier and yep I wouldn't like to live in Auckland... or Orcland for the matter. Its a great looking city, has a harbour similar to Sydney, but that's probably it, its not appealing due to its similarity to Australia, nah just kidding. I live in Aus and I'm telling you now, open you mouth about being a Kiwi and those sheep jokes come at you from everywhere!
Viggo Mortensen was perfectly cast for the role of Strider/Aragorn ... just my opinion...

I just saw this series of images of the Fell Beast at the Embassy Theater
The only things I don't like so far in the serie, is that Arwen was never there during the Flight to the Ford, no scene at Treebeards House, everything in the movie seemed that it was happening so fast (it took over a year for Frodo to leave the Shire in the book), and they dragged out the Battle of Helm's deep too much. Other than that, I thought that the casting was excellent.
PS - I was so wanting tTT to end like the book. Do you know how many riots there would be? It would be pure geneous, but oh well.
i dont think the movie was ever supposed to resemble the book verbatim, since there are some things that just wouldnt work on the silver screen. Its still one of the greatest movie trillogies of all time
And they couldnt have picked a better place to shoot it than in good ol New Zealand! The set for Hobbiton was up by Totra Springs, where they have this massive muisc festival called Parachute once a year, so while i was up at parachute i payed the quaint lil Hobbiton it a visit.
Ooh and hows this for resourceful!! For one of the battle scenes, they needed a reeeaaaaaally loud and believeable Orc battle cry. So during a cricket match at the Cake Tin (wellington Stadium), mr jackson got everyone there to scream and stomp and all sorts of crazy stuff which they then recorded and used in the film :rock:
Have you seen the extra footage in the extended versions? Amazing! I have both FotR and tTT Extended. When the RotK comes out in extended, there will be like 12 hours of LotR!!! 3.5 + 4 + 4+ ~ 11.5+!!!
OK - Ferret - you've got another kiwi here (ahhh, the good ol' NZ reunion!). I do live in Orcland (I'd forgotten it had been dubbed that!!)...and the weather and traffic are as crappy as ever (yeah, but the nice harbour on a sunny day redeems things a bit).
Pe7er is the exception that proves the rule that LOTR owns - the books first and foremost, now to a lesser yet equally valid degree the movies. IMHO of course!
A word of advice to Pe7er...check out the director and writer commentaries on the Extended Edition DVD's. PJ and Co. explain the reasoning behind their decisions in adapting the Sacred Texts. Now, you may not agree with much (or any) of it, but they do come across as bigger fanatics than most of us - myself included, and I reckon I'm a big fan of LOTR, Silmarillion, Lost Tales etc - and certainly they are well aware of the depth and breadth of Tolkien's work.
Perhaps these books will foever remain unfilmable? In some people's eyes yes. I for one am pleased with the efforts of my fellow NZer's and others, and I know my ability to produce a good film of LOTR is bugger-all!! Someone once said the only way to accurately film a book is to put it on the table and take pictures of the pages. Someone else once said (sorry can't remember who these are) that the best way to make a good adaption of a book is to throw away the book before beginning.
I'm glad PJ did neither.

Yes I am the exception. I know a different version of this saying: the exception proves the weakness of the rule.
I just don't accept PJ's vision, I don't accept him as a director of these movies. He might be a 10000x bigger maniac than me, I don't care. As a director he has no talent. This guy was making primitive movies for all his life and it's well seen in LoTR. What a shame :cry:
Who would you like to have seen make it? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who could or would do any better. All the directors I used to admire have all gone way down hill of late and their movies have been tripe. If it was a purely Hollywood effort, it would have been even further from the books and the locations and casting would have been even worse. I honestly can't think of any directors who I would trust to do this and am quite relieved that PJ did it from his more *outsider* perspective.
Casting is all subjective, and I think Viggo did ok. I thought he was totally wrong when he first appeared but has grown on me. King Theodin and Aowin(?) are poor choices but that's just me.
Thankfully I have never read the books and don't really intend to, so I can take the films on their own merits without all the baggage that comes from knowing too much of the whole thing. I think these films are excellent in both production values and their ability to convey complex storylines in an accessibl way. It may have been dumbed down a little but that's how films have to be to some extent. They are made to make money and work for the masses, unlike the book which was made because the author simply wanted to do it and didin't really care what people thought. Publishing the work was more of an afterthought than a purpose.
These two routes are rarely compatible and things have to give for the film to have any chance of ever being made. I am very happy wth the results.

It is kind of funny when you watch the movies though. First you see Rudy!! Then Magneto!!! Agent Smith!!! I heard that there are rumors (I haven't read about it since about six months ago) The guy who played Saruman is supposed to be Dumbledor(sp? I don't read HP books) in the next movie. All the great movies are intertwined.
