I am posting this for those of you that still like to use WinAmp. I new release of winamp5 rc8 has been released. I downloaded and installed it, and I am quite surprised how good it is coming along. I am not ready to give up on iTunes yet, but this is definitely worth a looksy.

Download link: Full Version: WinAmp 5 rc8

Winamp is tempting just because of the vast amount of skins available for it.

#80845

Thanx for the heads up FatAxl ;)

#80846

Winamp IS my player because I can change codecs for it. With the right codec, the MP3 playback quality makes iTunes look like a rusty phonograph.

#80896

QCD can do that too ya know <_

#80900

But as far as I know QCD doesn't have the RiPoste skin.

#80901

That's an interesting note about codecs. Where can I learn more about it? Which codec do you think is best?

#80905

i use the MAD plugin for decoding MP3s. And I use LAME to encode with Exact Audio Copy

#80912

but iTunes is 10 times sexier :D

Although it`s a bit slow on my comp it`s the only Apple prog i have and i`ll stick to it like i LOVE my iPod  and would never replace it with ANYTHING!

And pple tell me i can`t be an Apple zealot unless i hv a Mac :lo:

Well, the problem with iTunes is that it is dumbed down. It doesn't let you do the advanced things that give you better quality. It's just like a lot of All-in-one apps: Jack of all trades, master of none. It's like a dumb but pretty girl, she may look nice but I don't want her doing my taxes. Sure, iTunes is intuitive, but it doesn't even hide the advanced features anywhere... they just aren't there. I see people complain all the time about how Windows is dumbed down now, when Apple does the same things it's ok? At least in Windows there are advanced setting hiding somewhere.

iTunes is not the only Apple app for windows. Remember Quicktime? Doesn't it suck. That's probably why you don't have it. Not just the player, but the format itself is horrible too.

Fully agree :rule:

so what are the advantages of winamp5 over 2.9? just free-form skinning?

Isn't that what Apple is all about? Making things look pretty but dumb... ;)

I disagree. Having all those extra features are just that. Not every person need all those options. Just simplify it. If you want a more advanced or professional audio program, get one. Those bells and wistles are like a girl having an identical mind with you. That's is not very fun. iTunes is very intelligent: Smart Playlists; Reorganizing Music Library (yes, I like it); Fast Searching. In fact, for how much is made from code, not built into Windows, and how fast the browsing is, this is an incredibly fast program. Just make the program window as big as you like and browse around, it is extremely fast on my 500MHz system compared to the WinAmp 2 with Library. I am not an Audiophile so I, like most normal users, don't need the vast options in compression, encoding and storing. It would make everything more bloated (do you know how much larger the download file would be) and useless for an everyday user.

#80933

The advantages of iTunes are features which I don't really use. iTunes may be fast, but for playing MP3 files or for burning CDs its just not a great program in terms of quality.

#80934

OK, I understand your point of view. I was just stating mine. I personally love iTunes versus Winamp (used 2 for the longest, 3 kept crashing), QCD (I never really did like, I don't know why), Sonique (I liked for a while, but it became too slow), and WMP. WinAmp skins have gone downhill with all of the skin generator programs coming out. So I am just going to wait to see if new artistic skins come out.

Any screenshots perhaps?

Thanks!

Really?

I would like to disagree. iTunes has been by far, much faster at burning audio cds than both Nero Ultra AND Roxio Platinum on my system. In terms of audio quality, I laugh when people talk about the audio quality of one player over another. It's kinda hard to differentiate quality of sound when all of the decoders are based off of the same fraunhofer codec. True there are some differences, but really, they are negligible at best and are easily adjusted so it's kind of a bogus argument. If you truly want better sound, get a better sound card (with a good DAC) and for god's sake get some good quality speakers.

I use studio monitors, but I guess I'm lucky in that respect. :)

#80980

I would agree with Xero, MAD for Winamp is insane ! what a sound ! :)

Lame + MAD = the best choice :)

[drools] loved WinAMP 2.8, GOTTA get 5...

#81058

I can only hope that the final of 5 is as light on the resources as 2.9 is.

Thats the first thing i always get... Macwant, you should know that Wianmp 5 is called 5 not becuase its the 5th winamp (its actually the 4th) but because it bundles the features of winamp2 and 3 together as in 2+3)...

ergo winamp 5
