Address Book Clone

Hi everybody

Even though I did not post any message on the board, I read it every day ...

I'm working on an Address Book Clone (Panther's one). I know Mr Aqua has realeased "Roots" but I wanted to create a more powerful address book, and Roots's developpement is stopped (??). In addition, I found little annoying bugs (or I would say malfunction), but it's a personnal matter.

Application's name is "Address Book", and I plan the following new features :

- vCard support (import and export)

- Panther design

- nice search bar (as seen in itunes...)

- email and homepage navigation

- sorting of contacts (ascending and descending)

- hmmm, what else ?

check this webpage to get more info :

Please post your comments, ideas, suggestions ....

if it doesnt play mp3's im not buying it....jk

Looks good, i think you should colerbrate with alim on his mail clone and have your addres book intergrated with it, (or vice versa) and that would make the ultimate app. Mabie have it be an IM client too(far off but it sounds damn cool)

Not sure, maybe this is standard / already integrated, but will you have .csv or tab/space-delineated .txt import-export features, for people who use web-based mail, not softare-based applications?

Sorry, what I mean is... I have a massive .csv of yahoo contacts. Can I import these to your address book?

#80784

some news :

- the database is now a pure Text file separated with ";" then I'm pretty sure I will include import of CSV address book

- ICQ field added

- you can instant message ICQ and AIM directly through the little orange arrow

- directories view sho name and most useful information

For integration with other application, first I need to know if my application could be a safe and useful address book

Otherwise I heard about Mr Aqua had problems using the name 'Address Book'... ?

Please tell me more as I can't find any history of this (I don't really see why an application could not be named 'Address Book' ??)

u spelt enemy wrong ;) other then that good job, maybe smoother buttons and a different titlebar, (ie the itunes one)

I know for enemny (english is not my native language though) ;)

What do you mean by "smoother buttons" ?

Actually "+" and "Edit" buttons are from itunes for Windows, and looks exactly the same as original Address Book from Apple (except Bigger)

I know I need some work for skinning the application, but I focus on functionnalities first... and skinned title bar needs some programming work

#80819

Very Nice Indeed.

just remove the icon of the VB Form in the title bar. :canadian:

And everrything will be fine. Just add a little spice dude,...

I love it! Looks megasupercool! Don't make the titlebar like in iTunes PC, it's awful IMO.

Integration with alilm's Mail would be wonderful! (Y)

#80837

I would say add features for interacting/syncing up with a mail client and the Trillian Buddylist

and think about Bluetooth in the future

#80859

Advanced features will be for future development...

I've created a small page with features working, and some screenshots

Address Book page

check it to get informed about Address Book development

Waiting anxiously!

Did you contact alilm?

:shouts: alilm, come here & take a look, dude!!

#80907

I heard your shotus .

I dont know about integration though, Mail is going to have its own mini address book thingy, it will look nothing like this (non brushed), but it seems like pointless hard work to try and integrate them.

#80953

I would be so set if they worked together. Maybe not integration, just use the same files maybe. So you can view your contacts from Address Book in Mail ya know? That would be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: heres how something like that would work:

in Mail add an extra option to have an address book file and have a browse dialog to locate the exact location of the file that Address Book saves to. Whatcha think?

Good idea pixelmatrix!

Alilm, I hope you'll think about it. Just think ;)

#80958

But don't think too hard. <-- That wouldn't be good.

You know I'm liking this if it turns out to be. Developers working together to combine programs to work together. Like our own version of iLife. maybe aquaLife.

#80959

:: sigh ::

What's the point of having a community if noone wants to work together?

Dont be so quick to cancel the idea...here the guy out, Alilm.

Maybe there IS a way. right?

Cos duckie, I think we all know how joint colaborations work out.

It always means delayed release dates, and what If i wanna change something in the code, then Jib will have to change all his code. Oh and Mail will encrypt the databases because they store sensitive inforamtion.

#81006

Even without any integration, both applications will correctly work together, as my Address Book will open your default mail program, I guess Mail XP from Alilm ;)

My idea : let's Mail XP and my Address Book emerged, and we'll see later what can be done...

Otherwise, I've worked a little further on the address Book (search bar, lot of fixes...) and I will release a preview binary in few days.

My collaboration with Mithrandel and nAMP didnt seem to delay releases, did it?

Like I said, things change, give it at least an effort.

You do great work and the 2 together could be our strongest apps ever.

Is it possible to export your outlook contacts to a vCard file? I am just wondering as I prepare for the release of this great app :)

#81035

this looks like it is coming together nicely! that image editor thing looks really cool! i cant wait.

#81041

Im having trouble figuring out how to export vCard files from Outlook 2003..

Anyone know how?

#81139

OMFG, I forgot how much resources OutLook takes!

@ pixel - Try searching in the Help and search for vCard.

if(2003==XP) //I forget

{

Create contact for yourself, open it, File - Export as vCard

}

which application are you using as an address book ? the one from Windows ?

If so, just drag and drop a contact to the desktop, it will create a vCard (format 2.1)

otherwise, I am currently working on the picture editor : you will be able to open a picture, zoom in an out, and crop to a new file that will be used as a photo for your contact. It's almost done.

Next step : enable maximising of the application (is it really important for you ??), import and export.

#81229

Picture editor (Y) This is going to be an outstanding application. When you release it be sure to have lots of bandwidth on your server ;)

Oh, I DON'T need maximising :banging:

#81238

Picture Editor is almost finished !

I just need to make the slide bar working to zoom in and out (currently, you need to click on the small pictures on the left /right to zoom)

And the actual picture editor in Mac OS X Address Book :
