Yz Dock To Od Migration Helpers

Hello there,

having compared both YZ and OD SDKs I think that a translation layer DLL

is feasible. I am thinking of a DLL that appears as a Docklet DLL to OD and

as YZ Dock itself to an already released YZ docklet - it simply would translate

API calls between the different docks. This way, a seamless migration path

from YZ to OD could be opened. Fellow developers, any objections?

Before I start developing this I would like to ask the community if this is

really wanted - since Apple inhumated YZ Dock (so I am told) and we are

not to distribute YZ Dock, would this be a way out of the misery and the

porting delays? Should we respectfully accept Mr. Yamaguchis withdrawal

and stop developing docklets for YZ dock? (no offence meant)

BTW, the other way round seems to be much harder to implement but

also to be possible. Shame that MobyDock does not allow developing custom

docklets; we could have a uniform docklet API and develop each docklet

only once and run it in all three docks...

The reason why I am asking is that I am implementing a scriptable docklet

to further pull down the learning curve - to empower anyone with a graphics editor

and some basic (VBScript, JavaScript) scripting capabilities to create a custom

docklet without waiting for some elite C++ guru to take attention...

So the question is: Should I drop YZ dock support or not?

The answer is no, dont drop it just yet, theres so many YZ users around and will be for a while!!!!

Including myself... ;)

It sounds like a great idea...

I'd have to agree with Seph.

I certainly won't be dropping Y'z any time soon. Unless, something pritty big and wonderful happens in either OD or MD. Both are great alternatives and offer something different from the other, and I'll try them out from time-to-time, but Y'z is better suited for myself (for the time being ;)).

It is a great idea (Y). I guess performance related issues aren't a big factor for translating a limited set of API calls? (though I'd imagine it depends how often they're called - not a great deal :smartass:).

PS If you need any support testers and feedback I'm sure many people, including myself, would lend a hand :D.

I'm going to bet that OD will be integrating hardware acceleration at some point since Stardock is big on using HW acceleration as much as possible. We need as much conversion from Yz to OD as possible.
