Faster Av Protector

I bought Norton Anti-Virus and I had it set to Auto Protect. But with that I found that it slows my computer way too much. To the point when I just have Firebird running and it takes five (5) seconds for Y'z Dock to respond. I need an Anti-Virus because I do not get Windows Updates because, hell, it would take too long on a 56K and I have yet to download one. When I disabled the Auto Protect, my computer became significantly faster.

So my question, is McAffee faster? Or is there some other AV that is better, though I doubt it?

I use AVG (www.grisoft.com) as ts free, and seems to be fast. Detects stuff Norton doesn't aswell, which is nice.

I have noticed that Norton bogs the computer so I shut it off unless I am downloading from Kazaa or visiting sites with pop-ups.

I've said this many times before: Don't use AVG! It doesn't detect enough virii and it's updated very rarely.

I myself use Avast! antivirus, which i think is the best free av program. Sure, the auto protect takes up to 20 mb of mem, but at least its virus definitions are updated many times a week and it doesn't slow down your comp(at least not mine).

Of course you can believe who you want, but i wouldn't suggest AVG if you had any other alternative.

If you go to a university, check to make sure that your school doesn't offer you a free download of the corporate version. That is how I got Norton.

And, if you don't Windowsupdate. it's not really just virus's you have to worry about. That's the least of it all. You should be worried about getting exploited, and your boxed all owned up. especially if you're on broadband. I wouldn't be too worried if you're dial-up, nobody's gonna h4x a dial-up.

You're better off with a firewall, set to block stuff. I recommend Tiny Personal Firewall. Then you don't have to worry about either coming in. Unless you're a SFU who just runs stuff sent to them in e-mail from people they don't know.

That's not true. The hackers don't know what kind of connection you have, so having a firewall on a dialup is important too.

I use Sygate personal firewall, it's easy to configure and free. Wizard, If you need a fw too, try sygate or kerio.

@Wizard Have you tried panta antivirus? spanish program works great and its not as heavy as NAV or McAfee... not saying its a lightweight but its lightER....

Just so you know, if you use eMule, any type of firewall or AV running at the same time will make the whole computer crash. Complete black screen/restart deal. It only happens some of the time, though.

B, people don't individually target someone. You just nmap a whole subnet of cables/dsl's.. and see what comes up. And take it from there. In a matter of a few days, A guy with a decent connection can map a few thousand class c's. And if nothing else, connecting to a dial-up is crazy obvious, when you're getting 1.2kbps from it. Not that that doesnt happen with cable/dsl. But easily and obviously know if they're scanning dial-ups or cables. Hell, I scan my subnet at home all the time, just to see what other people in my area are running.

To the original question, yes, McAfee is indeed a lot faster. Norton is becoming a joke with the size of the thing and how damn slow it is. You need an extra 256Mb and 500Mhz just to compensate for the thing. <_<

McAfee works well, is fast and catches things Norton misses.
