Windows Update/task Manager/ie Problems

I haven't done anything I can think of to my computer, but suddenly a few problems have came up.

Whenever I open a Internet Explorer window, it opens then closes right away. At first I thought I accidently blocked http://uk.yahoo.com (my homepage) with AdsGone, but I closed that, and tried loading different pages and that wasn't it.

When my computer automatically downloaded a windows update, the icon in the taskbar disappeared as soon as I moved the mouse over it. If left many appeared until I had a complete row of windows update icons. For now I have downloaded the update by going to the microsoft website.

Since Internet explorer won't work for me, I downloaded the free version of Opera, which works for me.

I am running Windows XP Home edition.

Task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) won't come up for me, a friend referred me to another thread, which showed a problem with a pop-up box appearing, stating that it was disabled, but all I get is the icon in the taskbar, which disappears like the windows update does.

If anyone has any information or can help, thanks.

P.S.

Thanks es.xxi for helping me find the other post!

I keep telling you to buy a Mac E. ;)

Have you tried restarting or uninstalling any software you recently installed?

Or give it a good kick? :D

When I get a few thousands to spare, it'll be the first thing on me 'To Buy' List ^^;

Tried uninstalling everything that's been installed recently.

Wish I could just format, but I can't find that blueyonder broadband cd! >.

...It's taunting me... the blueyonder 56k cd has shown up. Lol.

Edit

The kick came when I found out it was infected with windows... lol.

did you make any recent changes? maybe a system restore will help.

also, maybe try updating internet explorer by getting the ie 6 setup and service pack from microsoft. maybe that'll restore your ie.

you could also run a repair of ie by following these instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

you could also do a repair install of xp.

yeah.. go to microsoft's website and search for the IE repair..

i had problems with my IE for mths and it worked wonders when i finally realised i cld go to their site for help.. :D

Just out of curiosity, are you using iEx? because that might explain your disappearing windows (happened to me once, looked about for all the windows that were just open not realising that i'd activated iEx :lol: ).

Also it might be worth trying to right-click taskbar and selecting the 'Tile' option (I had this problem with litestep where the Virtual Desktop Manager moved all my windows off-screen).

Hope this helps ;), If not ignore me

I'm not using iEx. I haven't even heard of iEx ^^;;

Thanks for trying to help. I tried all the methods you said, that I hadn't already done and still none worked.

I've had to format, so unfortunely... the windows background/icons are back >.

Ya, just go to a restore point.

Reboot into safe mode, F8 while booting. Choose to run System restore, (it'll ask as soon as windows loads). And pick a date & time before the problem existed. If you're not exactly sure, hell, go back 2-3 months.

I *gurantee* that will fix your problem.

if you're lucky, then yes. but if you've cleaned out old restore points, or if you've only allotted a small portion to restore points (the old ones get cleaned out automatically), you may not be able to restore it to a usable state, in which case an ie repair (or an os repair) looks necessary.

Just to clarify EdenB upgraded to WinXP Pro and ended up formatting his computer and apparently all's well now. ^_^
