It's sort of possible to run MacOS 8.6 on your PC now. Previously, 8.1 is the best you could do.

"The man* who put the JIT into Basilisk II has made history by getting a former Mac PPC virtual machine for BeOS to boot up (with extensions off) as a PPC 604 Mac emulator for x86 Linux.
According to developer *Gwenole Beauchesne, "However, there is another bug lurking around but you can still boot without extensions and run applications (tested MacOS 8.1). On a P4 @ 1.8 GHz, Speedometer 4.x reports speeds around 1.7x of a real Quadra 605 (approx. 50% slower than B2 without JIT). Now next step is obviously to write the JIT. ;-)"

We must stress that this is probably a very early alpha, so don't expect much more soon. Gwenole has been busy on this project for a long time and will undoubtably need time to work on bugs and enhancing the emulator. I recall the goal was to integrate the PPC emulation into Basilisk II as a new feature (like in December 2000 when B2 got 68040 emulation).

I don't have linux, and partitioning my disc and installing it would be a pain in the butt. Then running sheepshaver could only possibly get it to work, all for emulating the extremely outdated and obsolete OS 8.6. If OS 9.22 were to emulated, then that would be a big deal, but I guess this is a small step for me, but could be a giant step for Macintosh Emulation.
