[help]making A Transparent .png With Photoshop

Hi I searched the forums and I googled this all with no success thats why Im making the topic. I have tried several times now to export a transparent .png from photoshop all with no success. I was wondering if anyone knew of or can give me a quick tutorial on how to do this properly. what happens to me each time is the background of .png is never transparent. I have tried making a new image starting with a transparent backround and without each time with no success.

thanks in advance for the help....

(my avatar is an example of one I tried to create starting with a transparent background)

You can buy a piece of software forom Axialis called IconWorkshop. That exports PNG's w/ transparency. You have to buy it to gain the save option. Create them from Icons, GIF's, and even already created PhotoShop documents.

Free alternatives? Sorry, I don't know of any.

Edit: I spelled the name wrong and here's a link, it's $60.

there are aonly certain instances where a tranparent png will show up, for example in a dock, your avatar, im not so sure of.

but to answer your question if you creat a new doc in photoshop, go to layers, duplicate the background, selct the first layer, under the selct menu choose select all or control A, hit backspace to clear that layer. Go to layers palette and delete the background layer, you will now have a transparent bg image, do not flatten the image before you save it

EDIT Your avatar is transparent it just wont show here.

Thanks for the link Wizard $60 is a little to expensive for me. Especially since I have the option in photoshop already just gotta figure out how it actually works.

Yeah i thought p-shop did that....

when you go to the export preview screen under FILE, theres an option at the bottom midleft to change the background from white to transparent, in which transparent will be indicated by the white and checkered icon.

and yeah for forums i think only gifs can show transparency, im not sure about png's

when you click on save for web and you select PNG as your format, make sure that the check box for preserve transparency is checked.

Not sure if different Photoshop version have additional check boxes to add to the features though.

Hope that helps.

I had a bit of trouble with this too- I found out that I didn't have the "Transparent" option set in the New Image dialog box. You need to have the backround set to "Transparent" to export a transparent PNG. After that, it's all cake.
