Amd Or Intel

In a month or so i will be buying my 4th PC and although i know much about comps i still would like to hear what my fav comunitty thinks. My PC will look roughly like this:

ATI Radeon 9600 or 9500

1Gb of DDRAM 400Mhz

Creative SB Live! 5.1

Maxtor 80Gb (old one) + 60Gb WD

Samsung 959NF Monitor

The only thing i`m not sure of is the CPU. I`m a student and although i`ll hv to pay only half the money (the other half will be by my dad) i`d rather go with AMD XP 2800+ bartron core which is way less expensive than equal P4.

What r ur suggestions? I`m hearing different stories about AMD better for gaming/Intel for general (i`m not too much into gaming, although i play a good, CPU/GPU crushing game here and there) but i like lots of iCandy (thanks to AS )

So what do u think?

PS The MB will depend on CPU, suggestions welcome

I have a 2600 Mhz Pentium HyperThreading. When I render to DivX, you know, I never see more than 50 or 60% CPU usage. This CPU must being used with memory running at dual channel. I have 512 DDR 400 Mhz.

You could go celeron, because it is about as good as a pentium 4 was in early 2003.

Celerons cost about as much a AMDs, and their bus speed is at 400Mhz right now.

A good celeron is about as good as a AMD Athlon XP

It doesnt realy matter. People will run up to say ohh intels better, or amd is better, but in the long run with a price to price compairson there about equil. Hyperthreading is nice, but it doenst have much impact on game playing and the like. Its a godsend if your into 3d work and do rengering though, or converting a huge divix movie. Im shure you will be very happy with your 2800 though. In general amd systems are cheaper then P4 systems. The top of the line amd board is about the price of a midrange intel board, plus intel prosesors are more expensive. As for a motherboard i recoment:

there a little pricy, but you get what you pay for. Im also an AMD man, but its realy up to you to decide what you want. Youll be happy with both. Also if your buying a P4 you might want to wait till after xmas when they release the P4 3.4 EE. Prices should drop around the board.

edit: whatever you do dont go with a celeron. celerons suck, to compair to a P4 you can hack off about 500 mhz. So the 2.6 celeron doesnt hold a candle to the 2700.

A celeron would be too less for what you can get for an AMD. Intel is better for 3D rendering. So if your into graphic design, AutoCAD, gaming, you would get the edge in those areas. AMD is better for general purpose (email, word processing, music listening, photo viewing). Although it uses more power and generates more heat. So a good power supply and top of the line heatsyncs are needed. You will be happy with either. If you want to save money, go with AMD. If you want the edge and have a little professional power, go with Intel. I personally would go with AMD because it's cheaper and I don't use programs that are evanched enough to take advantage of Intel.

i have a shuttle pc with an athlon xp2400

runs nice and quietly, and is very powerful.

Its actually powerful enough that windows xp doesn't grind to a halt!!!

thanks for such fast replys guys, i shoudn`t mention how i apreciate them.

One thing i forgot to mention is that i`m going to buy Thermaltake XaserIII case + some mean (BUT quiet) fan so heat won`t be a prob

I`m using my PC mostly for net, Excel (for work), MUSIC , some PS7 and Aqua Soft iCandy

And as for my 4th PC, well the one i`m working on (3rd) is going to dad`s office (that`s how i`m getting half of the money from him ) and as for Mac, well let`s just say i worked almost 2yrs for my 15gig iPod, so guess how much it`s going to take me `till a nice Mac (now serious, i`m looking for an iMac for "my sister" she`s my dad`s fav and he`d buy her a G5 if she wanted )

if that's the case, then save the $$ and get the AMD. i've had both brands and the speed was really negligible for general purpose use. and also, it's not just the chip that makes the computer what it is, just make sure the other components are of good quality. and from the looks of what you have listed above, whichever chip you go with, will be about 10x better than mine.

Go with the P4 if you have like a lot of cash and like showing off benchmark results to your girlfriend.

Go AMD if you don't have much of the green stuff and benchmark figures don't mean sh## to you (that's me btw)

Dude go AMD! I repair computers and ave almost never had a AMD problem. My AMD funs great, and when I save up to get a new computer, it'll either be a Mac or an AMD.

I've converted to AMD at home 2 computers ago and for general use they're fine. The only thing is that they seem to require more cooling than Intel chips. My Bro has a more or less identical PC but with an Intel 2Ghz rather than my AMD XP 2.1Ghz+.

With 3 x 80mm and 1 x 120mm 'Quiet' Fans and with a heat responsive PSU (Antec TrueBlue), my PC runs at average 50-55 Degrees C. My Brother's runs at least 10 Degrees cooler and with fewer fans.

Also, even though the fans run at lower than 25Db I'm beginning to get weary of the constant 'drone'. I think my next PC will be Intel and hopefully much quieter and cooler!

IMHO go for Intel if the things that bother me, bother you, otherwise save some money for those other things in life and go with AMD.

i would most definitly go with AMD, i support them to the death... great products and fast.

and unbeliever, i will tell you this right now... i wouldn't buy the 2800... buy the MUCH cheaper 2500 and overclock it to 3200... i along with many other people have done this VERY easily and heat is not an issue at all... i have a vantec aeroflow on my 2500 @ 3200 and my heat at LOAD hits about 42C... which is not hot at all... it's kickass...

2500 chips run about $125 Canadian, which is very cheap... roughly 2.2ghz OC'd... equivilent to about a 3ghz P4....

Although you have an AMD at 2.2ghz and your bro has a p4 at 2ghz... they are definitly not equal... an amd, let's say 2500, is "roughly" about equal to a 2.5ghz P4...even though it's only like 1.8ghz...it's much faster than a p4.

Now depending on what kind of amd chip you have.. and how overclocked it is...that may be your heat issue. I've had a amd 2000 with a volcano 7 fan and it was running at about 50C idle... which was bad, but it was just a hot chip which a not so great fan. Now as where i have the much improved 2500 chip.. even at overclocked, my load temps are way lower then my old idle temps and i have a great, solid fan.

I'm guessing if you are running at 2.2ghz you either have a 3200 or a lower chip that is overclocked way too much... if not then maybe just a solid hsf.

no argument over pc's and mac's here... i love mac's... they are great systems.. wish i owned one myself. But pc's are just so damn cool and customizable and cheap that it's hard to turn away... but anyway..that's not what this thread is about.

I would go intel all the way. Intel chipset, mobo, cpu, and everything. After all, i think its better when a company designs the components that will be interacting the closest with the processor, they know their own products best so you'll get the best performance and stability with an intel setup. If cheaper is better for you, go with amd, but you get what you pay for.

you get MUCH more then what you pay for.... i dont know how people can say intel over amd, i really dont.. besides maybe a small heat factor... even with a lower speed and fsb... amd outruns p4 by far.. look up some stats...heh
