Different Moderating

I like the respect thing. It's a pretty neat feature. And i realize it was just implemented, and it's not something the admin's just point-clicked, and made happen.

But there are some down sides to it. Regardless of what the "guidelines" are rules are on it. (kind of like offtopic rules, and STFF rules). People don't exactly follow them to a "T". Someone gives someone negative respect, person A waits to see person B slip up sometime, and gives them negative respect. At the same time, Person A gives person B respect, person B waits a few days to see a somewhat relevant post from person A, and gives him respect points. And to further all this jibber jabber. A lot of the more "regular" old school people have mad respect. Sure they're valuable members of the community. Bot a lot of respect they get is just from having so many old-school buddies. Or merely on their name or "MOD" under their name alone. I'm not saying they don't make good posts; i'm just saying there's a lot of buddy-buddy ass kissing per say as far as respect.

So what i propose (like anyone cares). Is make it more slashdot like moderating. I'm sure quite a few of you are familiar with the /. . Instead of giving someone "respect" why not rate their individual posts. Their "respect" per say is then an average of how their posts have been ranked.

Let's say 300 members visit A-S daily. Randomly give; say... 20 of those people X amount of moderating points. To which they can score something 1-5, "redundant, informative, flamebait, offtopic... etc"

After a few weeks of doing the random thing. Start just giving moderator points to the people who have an elevated average. Not just pass out the moderator points to people with 0 respect type points. but maybe those with an average of 2 or above. This would also be a lot more anonymous type thing. So there's no friendships, or enemies. Then as well, just because 1 person modd'd his buddy's post up to +5, if another meta-moderator came around, and didn't think it was all that great. He could put it back to +1 whatever. Which would average out to +3.

Just my 2 cents, of course since I have no part in doing any of the wild ideas I want implemented, it doesn't mean too much at all. But i really think it's a lot better system to show people's "respect" in the community.

I'd been thinking about this a while, but only got off my butt and posted about it tonight. I just think there are some flaws with the respect system. Of course, /. has now turned to 'meta moderating' to make sure the moderators are doing OK. But as large as A-S is, i don't think it's the same ball park as /., not even the same sport.

I'm glad someone liked my idea. Now you're gonna give me a big head. If there's one thing I'm full of, it's new ingenious ideas on how anything and everything could be better. Watch out A-S.

Of course there are flaws in the system. There are always flaws in the system. There is no perfect anything. But I agree, A-S is growing very rapidly as of a month ago. And we need changes. But from what I pieced together through various post by Timan is that A-S is going back to vBulletin, although I have no proof of that. If this is true, then security and options will be improved dramatically.

Here's what my post was:

If any of you are familiar with Slashdot, they use a system called "Slashcode" that has rotating-moderation.

Basically, if you are an active/good member (they use a karma system to measure this), you get "moderator points". You can then use those points to, well, moderate.

Then there is whats called "meta moderation". You get to do this once a day if you are a long standing (6+ months) member. You basically rate the moderators, and that decides whether they could moderate again.

I think this would be a cool system for Aqua-Soft. Now slashcode was made for moderating comments-sections, so it wouldnt work for this, but I figured Timmie could come up with something.

The difference between slashdot and here is that there is no modding "up", since every post is visible.

So a moderator can give points or "respect"(or karma) to a member that makes an insightful/funny/interesting post. This "respect" determines if they can moderate. Its basically peer moderation.

Well, maybe some of the ideas could use some adjusting, but what do you think? The administrators still have "unlimited points" to moderate at will.

Deleted was raising an idea that is 100% legete. The fact we discussed it privately doesnt mean jack. In fact it would be nice to see what members think about this option implemented. Most likely the staff will have the final word and that will obviously be based on good will to benefit the community.

But; in their defense, you still need *REAL* moderators. Because even though if I have mod points, I can post some idiot 10000000 +5 FlameBait. I still can't do anything more about it. From what I understand, those guys can actually suspend his account, or even worse. From the other things i"m guestimating at, they can also close/move a topic. Which a /. type mod can't do. Sure I get mad at them sometimes (CON* for removing my posts DAMN U!) they are still very neccessary. The /. moderating system just provides a more rounded way of rating people's contributions. /. is much larger, so of course posts aren't removed. But that's also why the place has 500+ posts on some topics.

yea the respect system was only something to use temp. to see how something like that would work, but didnt work as planned so it will be scrapped on the new aquasoft
