Cd Icon On Desktop

Does anyone know of a way to make the cd icon appear on the desktop when a cd is loaded, and then disappear when it is taken out, just like in all the mac operating systems? I think that would be really cool, and I like that feature also. ;)

tweakxp or something can do that!

Peace

#6602

Yes it was called TweakXP. i would search Cnet.com for it. I think you get like a 15 day trial.

#6603

actually the program your looking for is called customizer XP

it has an option to automatically place an icon the to CD on the desktop..

in an older version the only prob was that it puts the icon in the default windows spot... on the left of the desktop .. :@ ..stupid Windows... if anyone can figure out a way to fix that TELL ME!!!.. :P

(i just downloaded a new version.. *i think* i'lll have to test it and see if the problem still exists)

Dang, ya that stinks. Let me know what happens. I was gonna say, I couldn't find anything in tweak xp that gave me that option. Thanks Nexus! ;)

Hope we can figure out that issue with the icon placement!

The only thing I don't like about it when it places the icon on the desktop is that it uses the icon for the actual cd itself, instead of an icon of CD. (In case you don't understand what I mean, if you insert the Windows XP cd, it places the icon of the Windows XP box thing on the desktop instead of the nice icon of a CD).

Also, if anyone knows of a program that will place ZIP disk icons on the desktop when inserted as well, that would be kick ass. I'd rather have that than CDs actually.

#6622

i think it'll be up to someone to write that :)

i don't think it'd be that hard since the concept seems straight forward. use the autoplay controls, then when it triggers, it will create a shortcut to the CD, using the icon defined in the autorun file. Oh! and location too

I hate it how windows place all dah icons on the left. it sux

#6627

Ya, I know what you meann flyakite. I hate that too! These programs aren't really doing what we want. I wish someone would just right this simple program. It shouldn't be that hard as you were saying kye. The concept is very simple. Well, I guess we'll have to leave it to the programmers out there, to see if they really care about this. I know I certainly do. -_-

hehe, wouldn't it be peaceful if OSX is avialiable for x86? Actually no! aqua-man would go sitekrupt

I tried the tweaknow program but I'm having another issue with it other than it showing up at the left.

The icon is not deleting when I take the disk out like it said it would. So when I put another disk in it just adds more and more icons and I have to manually delete them. Too much of a pain for me to use day in day out.

I'd like to see someone make a nice utility to do this and force the icons to be right aligned.

Well, at least we can see the possibilities here.

Yes, I have using 'Customizer XP'. If you have this program, look in 'CD-Autoplay' section and there, check 'Mount a CD shortcut on the desktop (like in MacOS)'.

Do anybody know if exist any program or registry tip that can do the new icons to appear in the right part of the desktop, from up to down? Wintidy can only alingn all icons in the direction you want, but the new icons appear in the left upper part, where exist a free space. I hope to be understandable.

Thanks XanthraX, that program actually works. Now all we need is way for the icon to appear on the right side of the desktop. :D

EDIT:

Darnit, the icon does appear, but then it does not go away when the cd is taken out. And it displays the cd's icon, not just a cd icon, like in mac os.

#7074

personally, i woudlnt' mind if it was on the left or right, just if it would display my damn default cd icon! *kicks pc*

#7119

Ya, well we dont even have that right now so... (hint, hint to program writers ;) )

The main problem with all these applications is they dont delete the icon when the cd is taken out. They will create it with flying colors, but they cease to succeed at deleting it when the cd is extracted from the designated drive. Wow, am I talking scientific now! Anyways we would really appreciate it if someone with the knoweldge could wip up something to achieve this amazing feat, because so far it has ceased to be achieved on a pc running windows.-_-:(

A bit OT, but I use a small app (in XP - works with 98 too!) which remembers how you laid out your icons on the desktop. :D

I have an idea!!!

Look at this:

CdOnDesk.JPG

Someone can make (???) a app that places a ico on the desktop, and the app makes the ico and name on the cd disappear when the cd is out, and make them appear when the cd is inn!!

Sorry my english is bad!!

I'm trying to code something like that ...

Edit:

The API stuff to detect if a CD was inserted and how many CD drives are installed is just ready. Now I need to code a smooth settings window and some other easy stuff.

We have now 3.30 pm local time (GMT +1) and I think it'll be ready arround 9.00 pm in the evening (I'm at work right now).

Another xApp - I'm going to call it "xMount" :)

great program. Will it be able to mount the floppy drive on the desktop as well? That would be a great thing too add.

#9029

For one I know it's impossible to mount the floppy drive because Windows does not detect a floppy in the drive automatically. What I would really, really like to see though is ZIP drive mounting capabilities. I would prefer that more than CDs even because I'm always going back and forth between the Multimedia lab macs and my PC.

Also, I think it would be nice to have an option for it to display either a generic CD icon or the actual cds program icon. I prefer just the generic CD but I'm sure others might like it the other way.

Anyway, just a suggestion. Thanks to all the devoted programmers working out there to make our computers more fun.
