Each time I try doing, the newly modified .exe just crashes...

With regards to wrong forum, I thought about posting in the iTunes specific area, but then its an icon related thing heh, wasn't sure...
It is an icon problem, but we are dealing with an iTunes.exe modification, therefore, it would be considered an iTunes situation and thus this would be the correct forum to post in.. or something LOL 
Anyways, in answer to your question, iTunes seems to do some sort of checksum on load.. If you are changing the iTunes resource icon and the icon you are replacing it with, is not an identical size match, then you have a problem. I'm not sure if iTunes is simply checking the filesize of the .exe or if its actually adding up its bits and doing a real checksum...
I think the only way would be to crack iTunes checksum and skip it then you could modify iTunes as you'd see fit.
I looked around in the exe of iTunes and found that it keeps its scrollbar images in PNGF format.. I created a program that searched thru the iTunes.exe for PNGF headers and footers and came up with 36 different png image files, all related to the scrollbars of iTunes.. I attempted to edit the .png images and simply changed the color, but i soon found out that the file format is a little different from your standard .png file... Even resaving the PNGF file to a PNG file without any modification doesn't produce an identical file of equal filesize.. If it would, we then could atleast skin the scrollbars, either that or crack iTunes checksum feature..

i tried chaging the icon to a little black one i whipped up but it didnt work. same result as you had. stupid touchy .exe files....
Doh, looks like some clever ppl in the community are going to have to find a way of making iTunes a little more friendly to our fiddling heh
All this trouble to get that cool music note icon into the systray to match the other b/w ones
