Need Help Installing Visual Styles.

Hi, I'm new here so please don't get mad at me for wondering how to do this. :shy:

I'm trying to use the Aluminum Alloy theme, but don't understand how to use it. I unzipped all files to the C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\ directory, patched my uxtheme.dll files, but Aluminum Alloy still won't show up in the theme area under display properties.

Thanks a lot if you can help!

EDIT: Isn't that a better title now? Please use the tags when making a new thread or you'll find that one of the weird(er) admins here has a fetish for deleting threads which aren't tagged [help] or [request] or whatever....

First off, nice thread title, it helps us alot.

Now, did you install something like StyleXP. This allows you to add theme so you can change the GUI in Windows. After you do that you can just double click the .theme. StyleXP is shareware, you can try it for a month, then you need to pay. I suggest you do. It's really nice.

u can found a shareware here

Try double clicking on the .msstyle file first before you go and download StyleXP. If your uxtheme.dll file really is patched, then it will work.

#75789

if it patched properly, it's a problem with the folder name.

if the file is called "gloss.msstyles" and you put it in the right place, make sure it's in a folder with the same name "gloss" and then it'll show up.

Thank you sid!

Whoops, missed that he patched it. Yeah, Holocaust is right, you should just be able to double click the .msstyle (originally i said .theme, that's something else) and it should bring up the display properties with the theme in the preview and you just click the Apply button. :D

OK, thanks for your help everyone. I'll go and download StyleXP.

#75794

you don't need to download stylexp.

if you want a free and simple alternative, use the patch. i have several if you want.

edit: i posted one here: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=112005

he has already patched his uxtheme.dll! arrr....!

however, you can put the file where you want it on your system and doubleclick it, although the shellstyle won't work this way. the way to do it right it creating a folder in %windir%\resources\themes with the SAME NAME the msstyles file has. AA.msstyles needs to be in a folder named AA, reborn.msstyles in REBORN, Luna.msstyles in LUNA etc...
