Aqua-Soft ForumsWith Christmas Season coming around, I'm thinking about getting a new laptop. The apple g4 laptops are pretty sexy and I love the look and feel of panther. However, I've used Windows PC's all my life and do so much with them. What I wonder is... Can you have as just as much fun on an Apple? The question is kinda vague, so I'll try to clarify. With a Windows OS, I can scour the internet and look for cool apps, screen savers, Warez, movies, new game demos etc. Is all this still possible with an Apple? It doesn't look like many new games that come out are for the Mac OSX, only some of the redone older games. For anyone who has ever owned an Apple, have you ever felt restricted by the stuff out there and available? I know most the big name software is readily avalible for Apples, but its all those lil things that I would miss if I decided to switch over. Even all the accesories like my memory stick media and palm pilot have software that seees to just work with PCs. What do you guys think?

Heh-em, you might want to take out the warez part.
Why wouldn't it be. After all, OSX comes with alot of stuff already built into it, you just have to dig around and find every little toy that they have to offer. There is also http://www.versiontracker.com which has a lot of OSX software, including Apples own web-site that offers free software for thier OS. Also, you can get iPhoto, iMovie et al already pre-installed on your Mac. Not to mention the "to die for" graphics and animations.

The only problem I have with my mac is games. Not enough of them for OSX. Some good game are coming out soon like ut2k4 and Halo to name a few.
As for finding cool apps,screen savers, warez, movies it's pretty much the same. As for your memory stick and Palm you can just stick them in a usb slot and they usually pop up on the desktop my Digi card reader did that and it came with software.
Mac users dont have warez see, because they can follow rules!

You never owned a mac have you?
Afaik warez is available on Macs as much as it is on Windows. There are P2P apps on OS X and where there's P2P, there's warez.
The real problem tho are games. Not enough of them are available on the PPC platform and they don't run as well they do on x86 machines.

What about that virtual pc program? How does that work? The more I think about it, almost all the programs I use everyday are PC based and probably will never be ported to the Mac platform (Matlab, solidworks, Labview etc) Could virtual pc software hanlde some of these memory and cpu intensive software?
Who's to say you have to give up your existing PC? Keep you current PC while you find other programs for the mac that can replace everything that you need. You'll probly soon find out that you will want to get rid of your PC.
I believe there is a matlab implementation for OSX.
VPC is not great but it can run most windows software. It can't run games because it emulates a 8mb video card. I tryed cs on it and it ran with 5fps <_

No, it's not possible. I don't think macs have the internet yet, so you won't be able to do any of those other things you wanted.. :banging:
With pc u can modded you can modded your windows to looks like mac. Its so fun.
But with apple, are you want to modded your mac to looks like windows?? Pleaseeeeeeeeeee

Then, my answer would be - NO.
PCs are GREAT NACHINES, though ugly and are windowzed. and whenever I get my hands on a decent income, I'm going to make mine into an aquarium for a couple of gold fishes (next to my G3 iMac) and get a G5 with an apple flat monitor. As an artist, this is like getting a Cray super computer for a research in a major house (not to mention the G5's are actually being sold as super computers).
