Why do I hate Gentoo:
1. Rediculously long compile times
2. L33t users who think they know everything (dont comment)
3. Unstable
I use ArchLinux. Its i686 optimized, with BETTER package management (portage wishes it could be like pacman), and its more stable.
Arch even has more up to date packages. 
same here.. im using arch.. contra always praising it got me into it.. and im glad i switched to arch linux!!

ArchLinux? WEll I'll give that a try some other day. I've got like a pack of 50 blanks at my feet. But I'm kinda tired with all the downloading and I wanna get to actually installing some of this shiz rather than just downloading different distros.

Well I've finally installed Fedora and I'm already having problems. I have an NVIDIA nforce2 based motherboard. My onboard n/w port isn't being detected (to be expected). So I downloaded the rpm off the nvidia website and installed it, but it still doesn't show up in Network configuration. The device name is supposed to be nvnet but I can't seem to get it working. Any advice?
Another weird thing I find is that on every alternate reboot, my mouse stops functioning. This is damn annoying. Can someone help me fix these stupid problems?

One more reason to stay away from Read Hat; I read somewhere that they are going to stop producing home-versions. From now on they will only produce Red Hat ment for servers..

The problem is, their rpms are sh##.
Download the source (link at the bottom of their download page)and download the installation instructions (just a html file i think, it probably comes with the source.)
Once you've done that, open up a terminal and do these commands:
# su
password: ************
# make
# make install
then open the network devices and it should be there, no restart necessary.
check the readme file though, i may have remembered wrong
your mouse problem, got no idea, perhaps try irc: freenode.net #fedora
one more thing, stability is relative, gentoo is unstable compared to other *nixs, probably not compared to windows.

Sid: You're lucky, Nvidia open sourced some more Nforce drivers and it will be included by default in the 2.6 kernel.
But for now, use google.com/linux . There is lots of tutorials on the net for that mobo.

Yeah I did that. The binaries they gave were sh## so I couldn't even install them properly. I had no better luck with the tarball. Finally I took the source file and recompiled it on the system which finally got my eth0 working.
Geez it's tough.
EDIT: Lol as if that wasn't enuff I'm having problems with connecting to my aDSL provider.

Well my ISP here is Sympatico. I was trying to setup my user account. I compiled the src for the nforce ethernet driver and now it shows my ethernet device as nvnet on interface eth0. I created a new connection (xDSL type connection), went thru the wizard which asked me for my username, password etc. Filled in all that info.
Once done, I selected the connection and chose activate. It prompted me saying changes had been made. I said 'yes' to save changed. So then it brought up a message saying the Network service had to be restarted. Did that from the Services panel. Then I went back to the Network panel and hit activate.
It brought up a dialog box saying 'Activating connection to Sympatico' and it just gets stuck there. The connection doesn't come online, nothing. It just gets stuck on the dialog box until I hit Cancel.
Help?

Well, then it must be your computer that is slow 
I used like two hours to download and compile everything.
And why is Slackware so good? You have reasons why all the other Distros are bad, but not why Slackware is so good

you sure you tried the right connection type? if you're connecting using ethernet maybe it doesn't want you to choose xdsl. sorry i don't know much about dsl outside of britain.
I run Redhat 8 on occassion on my comp, and I've never had a problem. I also used Corel Linux (any input? ) and it ran OK. Everyone I talk to says go Red Hat.]

have you tried pinging another computer(if you have a network) to check if the interface
is working and configured correctly?
i also checked the sympatico website for compatibility with linux, couldn't find anything.
Sorry to bump this but having read through, being on my Sis' uber bandwidth line and wanting to install linux.. I'm downloading Fedora now!

[edit]: Will I need to get ready by downloading drivers for my hardware and getting them onto a CD? I've tried RH9 before and had a horrible experience.. It wouldn't connect using my modem (either "No Responce" or freezes) and or change my resolution (curse you 800x600!). Does anyone know of a handy guide for total ****ies to Linux? (I've tried searching but alot are very vague..)
