PefectDisk offers the best defragmenting for optimization of often used files and overall disk maintenance. Depending on disk use, its best to defrag an NTFS drive about once a month or sometimes every couple of months.

The default Windoze defrag utility will not defrag the Virtual Memory, nor will it defrag the Boot sector. Both of those ( Especially the VM ) get fragged and can slow down your HDD. Also, the default Windoze defragger is painfully slow.

As stated, PerfectDisk by Raxco is probabbly the best defragger out there. They have a free trial, download it and see.

I used to use the format command on my 10Gb drive, but now my drive is too large for Fat32 (I miss it so much :wub: :wub: ). Only I used some other paramaters for format.

I was in a hurry: Format C: /q /u /v:HP_PAVILION

I was fealing over zealus: format C: /u /v:HP_PAVILION

I was really to lazy to type extra params: format C:

I'd recommend Diskeeper by Executive Software. For those using the standard windows defrag, its worth noting that the builtin defrag engine is made by executive software and on their site they state that the Windows built in defrag is a 'Lite' version of their full product.

After using it for about 6 months its well worth the money, keeps all systems in perfect state.

I use O&O Defrag myself. I quite like it because it has a variety of defragmentation techniques available and also the ability to defrag the page files, MFT and Registry.

I've never believed in defragging. It's way over hyped. So over hyped that even some of your average user's think it's something you HAVE to do. All the time a user will be having a problem, and when i get up there, "I defrag all the time" ya. bfd.

The only possible way I can think defragging would help out speed, is if you run games. Other then that. Nothing. Nope. Nada. I refuse to believe it. I can't speak for everyone. But guess what I run on my computer. A browser, an IM, an E-Mail client.. that's about it for daily non-stop use. Of course all your fun OD type stuff. Now then, guess how often those things need to pull data from my fragmented hard drive? Once, maybe twice.. not very often at all. And when they do pull data from the hard drive, how big is it? Maybe a few hundred K at most. I don't care if the first byte is at the front of my HD, and the last byte is at the end. Unless you have a 2rpm harddrive, there's no speed difference. especially if you have lots of RAM, like all of us skinning people do. Every app you use is loaded into memory, their graphics are loaded into memory. And when you're surfing the net, it's pull from the *internet* and loaded into memory. It never touched your hard drive, except for the occasional caching. Maybe i'm a ranting idiot, but never will I believe that defragging makes your computer perform wonders. Maybe if I open 500mb spread sheets every half hour... *shrug*

You have to remember though, you pull Windows from the hard drive every day, defragging helps with general Windows speed.

Sorry, but I have to disagree :shy:

I was an unbeliever when I used to use windows defrag and even Norton speed-disk but after I started using Diskeeper I noticed a considerable difference on every day task such as booting up and even on displaying items on your start menu and other everyday uses. It almost feels like a format and re-install.

As a side note I also use Ace Utilities and Norton Internet Security to keep my machine running optimally.

i Defragg every week at night when im getting some ZZZZ Diskkeeper is Good but just use the one that comes with windows works just fine a little slow but gets the job Done !

I use perfectdisk myself, it's considerably faster than most and does a fine job. My drives really do need defragging frequently as I'm shifting up to, and over 2GB per day on my machine from small few Kb upto 1.5GB files and everything inbetween. Pulling that much data around constantly put's files wherever it can fit them and they get fragged to hell. It slows the read and write times down considerably when it becomes fragmented into bazillions of smaller chunks. I used to think dfrag wasn't necessary on NTFS but I've since learned it has a big impact on what I do at least. Others mileage may vary depending on what you do with your machines.
