Could someone be kind enough to teach me how to remove the tabs in MSN messenger which is on the left side, neither useful nor pretty. TIA.
what version? at least for me, i can go to tools > show tabs > uncheck all the tabs.

To remove tabs:
You have to edit this file: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\%userid%\ConfigCache.Xml
Each tab is within the tags.. Just find the tabs you want to remove, then delete it from the code, and save the file again

It's actually very easy to make your own tabs. All you need is to point to a png file for the icon and an html on the web..

But, I can not find the ConfigCache.Xml file in my MSN messenger folder.
I have view all hide file and protected file, but in my MSN messenger folder there are only backgrounds, customemtions and usetile folder and a lisecache file. No ConfigCache.Xml file. By the way, I am using the MSN messenger 6.1. Could you help?
It's there for sure. Try to search for ConfigCache.xml

hi, Zacharicus, thank you for your instruction, But i am sorry I can not find the file you told. I used the search tool to search it, but i can not find it in my PC. I wonder why, So could you please tell me more? I am using the winXP, MSN messenger 6.1. I know that the tab in MSN6.0 can be customized, but after 6.1, it can not be customized by itself.

To kill of your tabs you could open Messenger, go to the "Tools" menu, click on "Options", go to the "Privacy" tab, and check the fourth checkbox on there - "This is a shared computer, so don't display my tabs".

It should work using dreamz, zach and Stevie suggestions. If not, try backing up the MSN Messenger directory located in Application Data, as previously mentioned, then delete the directory. Make sure Messenger is closed and not running in the notification area. Reloading Messenger should recreate the directory with the ConfigCache.xml - just edit it as zach said. If it still doesn't work restore the backup and give mine a try, if you like .

Man.. i have the same problem... i tried deleting the folder and then launching MSN..
it then create a new folder but the XML file was not there..
i followed every step but its still the same..
i even searched for the file but it aint there..
im using 6.1 too..
Why would you go trough such a process?!?!?!?
Go to msn's properties then go to the privacy tab
and check the box that says "this is a shared PC so dont display my tabs..."
VOILA...
