Advise On G4 Upgrade

After researching out the wazoo, and saving some money for an upgrade, I finally bought a cheap Mac, and I finally bought an upgrade for it.

I finally got this mother upgraded from 350 to a 1.2 and yes. . .its awesome. . .

BUT

Shouldn't this thing have a Fan now? I'm using the Sonnet Encore 1.2 and it got great reviews from MacWorld etc. (actually all upgrade cards got the same rating, this one was on sale and easy to install), but two of the four G4 upgrades have fans, two don't, this one doesn't. . .and should it like the others? MacWorld says that it actually dissipates the heat pretty well, but I'm a PC nerd and I know how important P4's need their fans.

Yeaaaah, since iTunes came out, it kinda put me out of business with MusicMatch Skinning.

And that's a good thing.

Been busy with my job. FINALLY got a promotion and I've had my head in a Unix book, and bought an older Mac from my friend. Been learning the ways with Macs and Unix. Been busy. And that's a very good thing.

Working on getting this thing FAAAAST like my PC. But I'm afraid of Heat and stuff.

So, any help would be awesome.

I'd suggest emailing Sonnet and asking what sort of fan would fit on the upgrade card.

If one is concerned about heat then adding a heatsink/fin is always a good idea.

They're inexpensive, help system stability and prolong processor life.

If it didn't come with a fan, it doesn't need it. A lot of the upgrade cards don't have fans on the CPU card. Hell, a lot of Macs don't have fans on the CPUs.

Sonnet is a good brand and IIRC almost none of theirs come with fans. You can put one on there if you like, but it isn't necessary (unless you plan on OCing that thing).

Always get a fan, it'll keep your machine running smoothly, and performing to its maximum. The machine was not designed for clock speeds like that and the heat sink its probably way too small, your parts may overheat, so to be on the safe side get your self a fan, they're pretty cheap and easy to install.

But according to the manufacturers and magazine, the heat sink does a good job. . .but I just don't trust it? Also, I've notice that when its been on all day, I see the beach ball a tad more than when I first start it up. Now is this my imagination or a cpu getting hot?

I think I will go with a fan for the cpu.

Who makes G4 Fans and heat sinks? Where do I buy one?

feel like I'm learning a PC all over again. . .yeah yeah I know they're about the same, but its just the little things am I worried about?

i think a bit of a slow down happens on most computers after a days use... once you've filled up all that memory its bound to be a bit slower.

if the heat sink is too hot to touch, its too hot...

thats generally good advice i think.

Check ebay for your fan, they have lots of odd things there. BTW: the fan doesn't need to be G4 specific, it can be generic, it'll work all the same.

After running around 6 hours or so, the heat sink was still really cool to the touch. I guess I'm in good shape?

I went to the Apple store for the first time and actually bought something. . .cause I can now. WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Panther is really nice fellas, buy if you can.

Also asked this question to the Genius Center. Now I know that Apple doesn't "support" 3rd party cpu cards, but guys c'mon. . .humor me, help a brother out. When I can AFFORD a G5, it'll be bought, but for now, someone new to the Mac world, HELP A BROTHER OUT!

After I asked some questions "that was supported" I asked him again about my situation and he recommended a PCI Fan to pull all the heat out of the box. That's a new one to me, have you guys ever heard of this? What's a good brand? Artec?

I don't mean to beat a dead dog with my question, I just don't want to see my money flushed down the toilet. I really appreciate everybody's help.

Almost any pci fan brand will do. They got vents on the slot side to push the hot air out from the cpu and specially the pci (video) card next to it. That is a very good recommendation.

I'm having too many problems with Panther after upgrading, I guess I'll do a clean install to see if they get fixed. Half of my apps such as IE, QuickTIme, FCP 4.02, and AddressBook don't work!! >.< >. :rant: :rant:
