The OpenDarwin project is based on the latest sources available from the Darwin project at Apple Computer. "Mac OS X programs" could mean any number of things. It's possible that Some command-line programs or X11 programs could run without modification on Darwin, but in general, the things that make Mac OS X what it is are not available for Darwin. A number of system frameworks, as well as the Quartz layer and any Cocoa/Carbon/etc. graphical applications rely on code that is not available in a pure-darwin release.

In addition, the x86 (Intel-compatible processor) version of Darwin won't run software built for a Macintosh computer at all, since code written for a PowerPC will not run on a processor of that type.

i don't know if this this sreeenie was taken from Opendarwin or not ,but the oringinal poster (people who posted on a chinese pc forum) said this was so

so i am not sure ,i posted it here and hope somebody would gimme good answer.

and the guys said,users should be careful installing this system ,cuz i has a UFS file format ,not the ones,NTFS ,FAT,FAT32 or something els.and should back all your files up b4 you take any action.CUZ this system will do a whole farmation to your whole harddrive(including all the partitions).so better to have two or more HDs.

Today XDarwin support was added. XDarwin is the XWindows port to to OSX. XWindows is the GUI display on UNIX systems. I don't know much about it. But I imagine this is a BIG step.

Again, I didn't read much, but remembered reading this on /. today, so figured i'd paste the the link. I figure if you read the posts, and follow links, you could find out more about it.

Ok, kind of read a little. I guess what's so great about it. Is the emulation layer in the NetBSD kernel (darwin) is advanced enough that it can run that native OSX app. Which means it's very oh so much closer to running any OSX app. Which means within a year (hopefully, just my guessing), that OSX will be compatible with x86. And since they (apple) use'd an OpenSource kernel for their OS. If this is created, there's pretty much nothing they can do about it.

Hopefully one day we can all have OSX, on our poopy (that's for you Goku, and you getting mad at us "kids" bad words), x86/intel based CPU's.
