From Windows 2k To Xp...easy?

Ok, I have had it with windows 2000. It's rock-solid, never crashes or freezes but I just can't bear to look at the GUI anymore. So I'm gonna go for XP and get me a decent aqua xp theme.

Here's my issue: I can nót afford to have my computer crash on me, since I only have one PC and I work on it 10 hours a day.

I'm thinking of simply installing XP without first deleting windows 2000. Will this work without all my programs and files being lost?

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

I would back up all important data and do a clean install of XP, just format.

Dude.. XP is so much better. I have had 95, 98, 98 SE, ME, 2000 and XP. XP is friggin' cool! By the way I have both Pro and Home (nope, not pirated . Actually bought it..). Home on my laptop, Pro on my Desktop.

clean format is way better. Find some way to back up everything and then do it fresh. I am not saying anything will go wrong if you just do it over, but then you are looking at all your drivers having to be updated and lots of stuff geting installed over and such, its just 'messy.' If you work on your computer that much then you should probably keep it clean.

Ok, good thing the holidays are here, so I have 2 weeks to do a clean XP install before work kicks in again.

to upgrade IS possible. I ran on a Win2K -> Windows XP Pro upgrade since I upgraded a few weeks after Pro was available. Unfortunately everyone else I ran into didn't share the same experience (I only did it to see if it would work!)...

I finally ended up doing a clean install two weeks ago when I ran out of hard drive space and moved up to an 80GB drive.

My recommendation (if you have the time to futz around if your world blows up), is try upgrading.... if nothing else it will at least raise your point of aggravation that when you DO do a clean install of Windows XP, you will enjoy it so all the more.

Oh and dont forget to back up anything critical...twice (Murphy of Windows will visit and at least steal one of your backups...)
