Panther`s File Vault

hi,

why can`t we do a good app like the panther`s vault? ..... i mean we can make something with a similar interface. ... what about the functions=? well... we can do it using lots of encryption program out there (most of them for free) .... I`M NOT SAYING we must use their code ! no.... but what we can do is use the interface we made and then pass the information to the encryption program we own (those for free i said before).... well that`s only an idea .... who has a better one ? ... and the most important .... who`s up to do this nice app ???? ....

look some screen shots and those things about it....

Umm...NTFS has built in encryption. Just right click on a file/folder to encrypt it.

Yeah, but for us muppets who got XP home, we don't have encryption. I use PGP instead.

But I still think this has got to be the biggest "pie-in-the-sky" idea yet. I don't care how talented the developer here, I wouldn't trust my data to a beta-version where I run the risk of losing it permenantly

You still have encryption in XP Home, and even in Windows2000 and I believe in NT.

Its part of the file system, not the operating system.

actually, no..

it is part of the operating system, while NT4 runs on NTFS, windows 2000 was the first to have EFS.

for some reason MS decided not to put it into Windows XP Home Editon.

Oh man, that's bull.

It IS part of the file system, but Microsoft doesnt let you do it in XP Home.

from MS:

The NTFS file system improves security by allowing you to encrypt files and folders, and restrict access to files.

But yes, There are different VERSIONS of NTFS. NT4 uses NTFS4, 2000 uses NTFS5, XP uses NTFS5.1. I wasn't sure exactly where it was introduced.

This is classic Microsoft. Well, we'll give you the technology, but you can't use it unless you pay us extra money.

This is just like the networking clause in the Home EULA. There is nothing stopping XP Home from running a webserver or connecting to a network. I did it for a while, and it ran them fine. But MS doesnt let you unless you pay more money, even though the software IS capabable.

Hey, I used to have xp Pro. Now I have Longhorn 4051 and belive me, you can't right click on a hard drive, zip drive, or folder and have the option to encrypt your data in any of them. I think that the whole panther`s vault idea would be cool. It just makes windows look and kind of act like OS X, and it also it encrypts data.

The main point here is not about the encyption... but to have a Good app "that look like the one above (the filevault) " that is all.

wouldn`t be great if we could have something that look like the real one (but it can work only to pass the parameters to another program in order to be encrypted ?). that is the easiest way to do it. and safetly.

Well, what's the point of having an encryption program if you don't use the best encryption out there? I'd say PGP, I have a lot of trust in them. When making a program, work on the core, then functionality, looks, then simplify it for you and the user. Those are my rule in programming.

Alilm, you could probably make a better filevault than apple as far as I'm concerned, but isn't it a bit risky if you release a beta and it destroys peoples data like the real filevault has done to some people?

There is such a thing as a test machine, and besides, I'm always reformatting my hard drive, so if the beta kills longhorn, I'll just reformat by a boot install. In other words, good luck alilm.

@ simplex - Just do what I do and create multiple accounts restricting the documents and settings. Then once you get enough, burn them onto a CD and mark it MM-DD-YYYY Pics. Reverse phsychology really works!

couldn't I do it with an account that is already set up? I have xp. Only one other user.. my roomate but theres something creepy about him seeing my porn and vice versa. it's just one of those wrong things. :canadian:

What, your porn seeing your roommate? That's doesn't make sense.

Yeah, you can lock out other people from being able to snoop around other accounts. I can't find it right now. I'll edit this post when I do.

Wow, I don't even go through this much trouble. It also helps that everyone in my family is computer illiterate. They have problems ripping CD's. And I've showed them about 5 times.

Edit: I forgot to add this - I leave stuff on the desktop even. They are like "You have a lot of icons on that", (they say "that", hehe) and I just say "I'm working on a new web-site", "Oh."
