A Note To The Masses!

Hello everyone... think I need to clerify a little how the running indicators work. They are based on the ".exe" program file that a shortcut points to. If something points to an exe, regardless of the arguments that come with it there will always be a running indicator under the icon when that .exe program file is running. If the shortcut does not point to a program file, it has less chance of being effective. When pointing to documents, it tends to work well having an indicator while the single instance of the program that is started when that shortcut is ran is still running. Pointing the shortcut to a folder and not an exe will not show in indicator as it is unrealistic for the program to try to determine if that folder is ever open in explorer... and windows won't tell me either when open the folder what window it was opened in, etc etc. Similar deal with webpage links. Blah blah blah.

In short!!! :P

- Shortcuts pointing to program files will have an indicator *whenever the program they point to is running*.

- Shortcuts pointing to a file/document/etc will have an indicator only when you click on them, and will have them until you close the program that was ran when you clicked on the shortcut.

-Shortcuts pointing to folders/webpages will most likly not have an indicator, as I'm not a part of explorer/IE and do not know when the user stops looking at that folder/webpage..... and also windows does not report to me the window that is created when i open a folder/webpage reliably, making it even more difficult ;p

hehe awe well hopfully noone takes it in a bad light LoL just wanted to post something for *everyone* to read that I forgot to mention in the release notes, because the running indicators don't seem to make a lot of sense until you know how they work ;)

consider this thread as being renamed to: "A note to all of my awesome ObjectDock users :-D"

mcpinty: yep, planning on adding that to the next release! 3 modes.... always-on-top, always-on-bottom, and normal z-ordering. :)

VideoMann: hrmm... yes good call. I have a choice to make there... i could either A) resolve those shortcuts and use that program file upon dropping the shortcut (e.g. drop in a notepad shortcut, it points to notepad, not the shortcut), B ) resolve the shortcuts upon loading, and use that program file when detecting a running program (eh probably not) C) ignore the problem.

....Sounds like I should do option A. Will look into it ;)

if you make it so the shortcuts will point to the .exe and not the shortcut, then wont shortpopup stop working? unless menus will be implemented sometime in the future.

I've done some research based on the info you gave me earlier about how/why my AquaApps don't show up in the task bar area of ObjectDock. As you know, all of my programs are written in VB and all VB programs have a owner window whose class is "ThunderRT6Main". Each VB6 form window has a class of "ThunderRT6FormDC".

Hope this sheds some light on things. If I remember correctly, ObjectBar didn't show apps written in VB in the list of running applications in earlier versions but I think it does now.
