About Making 'custom' Iconsets

I saw the contributed iconset from Goku...

This is what I mean.

First of all I didn't give anybody permission to convert my icons and re-distribute them!!!!

I gave one converted set to this comunity as a present.

I thought you understoud what I was talking about that people use my icons, mess them up or combine them with others, make totaly new sets from them... And here it starts again!!!

Is it so difficult to understand that people have to keep their hands of my stes when it comes to these sort of things?! I put a lot of effort in making them. I make iconsets that belong to eachother and then some elephants just use a bit of this and that and make it in to a complete new set.

Isn't that a bit unrespectfull...

Last time I had a small discussion on this site I thought you understand the problem I had with Windows users that they just steal and take anything.

You said it wasn't like that, I thought ok give it a change so I converted one of my sets fo you and now it still happens.

What's wrong with you people?!

I decided to get rid of all the sets that are not in a PiXadex format on my site.

Unbelievable all this...

Wow,... I would have never thought that goku of all people would distribute someones icons without permission. Are you sure that Goku didn't put your name in there somewhere? Maybe he just linked to your site or kens. please check the url, if not then i don't know what we should do.

Edit: "its a relatively big zip (26mb) and it includes rare os x icons I customly made. In addition, it has icons made by mix the pix, Apple®, and various OS X applications." I didn't download the actual file so i think that he put your name inside the readme as well. Still it wasn't right of goku to do that without your permission. What is this world coming to.

#71209

Read Hein's post carefully once more and check Goku's screenshot (once more). I think you'll see the issues Hein has here are multiple and legitimate.

I think Aqua-soft has an identity crisis in this regard. If there are rules regarding icon-posting, they ought to be kept to firmly, or else no rules. This kind of schism will drive some artists away in the longrun, to the detriment of the community. Sh!t this sucks. :worried:

EDIT/ Moderator/admin, someone can close this thread (and move the posts?) to Goku's original thread in the Icons forum before it gets out of hand?

Thanks,

Ji

#71217

I'm not about to close this thread- Goku deserves every right to defend himself, and I'm going to let him have it.

What I will do, however, is move this thread to the ripped works forum, where it should have been posted in the first place.

Oh, and a warning- at the top of this forum, you'll see this:

"No flaming or rumors, and only FACTS can be posted"

Consider this your warning- anyone flaming or trolling in this tread will be suspended anywhere from 3-7 days. I've done it before, I can/will do it again. Let's get this issue sorted out without disrespecting others in the process.

Yeah

alilm - I think you should speak for yourself in this matter.

As a graphic designer and content publisher, who has had her works spattered throughout the internet and has had to go "hunting" (and oftentimes have websites removed due to copyright infringement), I can honestly say that content ripping HURTS. And yes, even if credit is given where credit is due.

Oftentimes, I don't mind if people use my works on their website or offer my stuff for download ect, but only if permission is given or permissions were granted for redistribution via a file attached to the works. I personally find it disrespectful to have it any way otherwise.

Your tone of voice (or style of post) only assures Hein and other artists that Aqua Soft is NOT the place that they would want to upload and distribute their works.

I'm commenting on your post becuase you're a highly repected developer in this community and although you might believe that redestribution of works in a specific form (such as without permission) might be acceptable when it comes to your personal works, not all of us feel the same way and some of us would prefer that our works and content be redistributed (if at all) in accordanance to a different license.

edit - I have just noticed that you edited your post, feel free to regard this post as irrelevant if you choose to do so.

Hey, I wasn't saying to CLOSE the thread, just consolidate, man. take it easy. I think it's good to let it sort itself out. No disrespect to anyone, least of all Flarex.

Understood. :)

And just so everyone knows, I do what I do and say what I say to keep things under control here. This will get sorted out in due time.

Liron: I suggested to alilm that he edit his post, which he did. However, you did raise some valid points- thank you.

Thanks Punk of Punks.

It's clear that Aqua-soft people are pleased to get in with some of the prominent artists in the modding community, which makes it hard to understand why there's no policy in place vis-a-vis icons as is the case with warez. Will it take a letter from an artists' attorney to crystalize the issue?

It's sad. I would write Hein and ask him to reconsider if I believed things might change or it would persuade him differently. But when the problem is generated by a mod/admin, changes have got to come in the form of policy.

In that way, maybe Hein's complete and total diss can have a postitive impact. Imagine if more of the Mac-based artists moved to Hein's point of view. Friends, a bit of introspection might be in order.

Now my 2 cents...

There are to parties here. That makes this issue especially alarming...

1. Goku, one of our trusted and beloved Admins

2. Hein, one of the best icon artists around

We have to realize first that icon makers, theme makers and so on are the food from which a community like this feeds and therefore we need to pay special attention to them and their "rules of engagement".

It is very inappropriate that Goku overlooked hein?s demands as for spreading his work... specially because he is an admin and with all the inflow of n00bs to the site he needs to give a very firm example.

However, everyone makes mistakes and Goku, sayayin and all is still a person...

There are some icons that you?ve had for so long you feel everyone has them, so you don?t even think (which is wrong. don?t think otherwise) about asking for permission because one assumes that the widespread of the mentioned icons is due to the artist being cool about its re distribution. So you just throw them in the pack, thinking that they will only be taken as "sharing" and that you?re backed because the artist prolly doesn?t really mind you doing so.

based on my own experience>

We need to learn about this kind of mistakes, I for one I?m glad that Hein pointed this out because it will still give an example to the n00bs and other non-n00b members too.

As Liron wisely pointed "...content ripping HURTS. And yes, even if credit is given where credit is due.".

I am really sorry about all of this Hein, even if I didn?t do it I can feel for your side too and as an Aqua-softian i apologize.

@Goku, please come and comment on why this happened man... we have to hear your side too...

Cheers

i was oblivious to these discussions.

I SERIOUSLY didnt know these icons where heins and i truly apologize. I got scattered sets of icons, and I got them all from people in my IM :(

I did though recognize a few and even after mentioning who's work it was, I knew I shouldnt have just re-distribute them - and I got commented about it by couple of members.

I then, removed them and updated the FILE.

I find it very offensive this whole thing is under "rips and unauthorized works" as I ever publically mentioned anything about work i've done which got whored, redistributed AND even had my name removed from its credits.

I havent stolen any credits, I highlighted "collection" at that thread. All that i use there now (as far as i double checked it) has nothing besides modded OS X icons.

The problem is 'redistributing' it and I immidiately removed it once I realized these icons were forbidden for distribution. I apologize.

:(

I removed the link once again. I'll go to your site and go over one by one to see what is included even in the modded files, now that I see the "RIP" motif repeat itself. Again - I was really unaware it was yours, I was assuming these were just other apps I dont have on my mac and infact now that i checked my mac, i do have your icons but i didnt (i thought i didnt) use them along with others.

My very bad, and once again, I'll fix it.

#71287

I am uploading a clean set after making sure nothing modded from any individuals is included.

Again, sorry. :canadian:

Goku,

I am on your side with this. A simple mistake is a simple mistake. I dont think everyone needs to jump down his throat about this. the fact that he is an admin doesnt mean he is not prone to making mistakes. Ease up people. No offense to hein but, your concerns are justified, but ease up on the man, its not like he was promoting this work as his own, we all knew that we were getting icons from other sets, and Goku, not ONCE took credit for any of it.

Hein not to push the point, but you are being a little uptight about this, i mean they are icons for crying out loud, you arent charging money for them, you arent losing money from PC users using them, nobody doubts your talent and it is frustrating when your work is Manipulated and pawned as a users with no credit given to you. But this is sooo not the case here.

I am anxiously awaiting the delivery of an Ibook and couldnt wait to get my hands on your icon sets for my new book, but I am seriously reconsidering this, as your attitude about all of this is starting to affect my opinion of you. You have this misconception that every PC user is trying to screw you in some way shape or form, and its starting to sound more and more like you have issues with PC users as a whole and not a select few that maybe steal your work. Goku is a mac user at heart, so many of your arguements about pc users dont quite hold up.

This is my only contribution to this topic, I will not further defend, or reply to these statements, flame me at will, lower my respect as you see fit, but I am increasingly getting pissed at these artists. The world does not revolve around you, there are plenty of other icon artists out there that are willing to share their work with all users. The members of this community that prance around these artists like they are walking on eggshells are just further fueling your fragile nature, and I won't stand for it, and i will not use icons of these type of artists.

Thank you

Exactly what I said

In fact after reading the whole of your post Photo, I am in your exact mind set. Hein's delghtful grouping of all PC users into one category is disgraceful. Why didn't you directly talk to Goku about this? I wanted to say this before but I felt it was too soon.

#71310

no, hes right, all windows users are evil.

#71315

I think you're both missing the point here! Hein specifically prohibits his icons from being converted in the first place. If you convert them for Windows, you do against the will of the artist and should only be using them for personal use. Now I understand that Goku meant no ill intent, but it did take one day after acknowledging that files were in there wrongly to update the link. Honestly, I took that as, "You're right they don't belong...hurry up and grab people because I don't feel it?s a necessity for me to remove these soon".

Furthermore, I don't really see an issue with how someone wishes their icons are distributed. Simply giving someone credit when the "read me" prohibits redistributing/converting in any way without permission is pretty sad. These aren't MP3's folks! You can't blame overpricing on why they get ripped/torn apart/edited/redistributed and etcetera. All the artist requests for free work, is that you drop a line to say "hey I'd like..."

There is such a lack of respect for people who work months on design work and release it for free its ridiculous!

#71320

It seems that my point is still not clear here.

Do you think I am the only icon designer that has this problem?!

Almost every designer I know has the same problem with converted icons...

And again I try to explain why:

The problem is that when you make an iconset you do your best to make it a great set. A lot of icons are thrown away by designers because they are just not good enough for the set.

So in the end you publish this set with icons you had a lot of work on and are very proud of.

Some icon designers convert the sets themselves to stop the pirating and than we come to the part what is realy NOT DONE!...

People start combining sets, icons, bits and pieces of htese sets where designers where working on with a lot of pasion.

They just make them into new sets and redistribute them and the worst thing is that they combine them in some dodgy icon app. with other peoples icons.

The pixels lose their sharpness, color etc.

Now an example for the people who still don't get it:

Take the mona Lisa and cut it out, then you take the nightwatch of Rembrandt and stick Mona Lisa's head on the commandant in the painting.

Than print it live size and re-distribute it.

Another thing I want to reply to is that JUST because I don't charge money for my icons you should respect all this work and the READ ME file what I put in all my iconsets!

It sounds like when I would ask money for it that people wouldn't use my icons.

Maybe an idea... Pay for every download...? Any ideas?!

Hein

There's also a lack of respect for general members here.

Unbelievable all this...

He seems to be blaming us for this.. US!

It angers me just reading this post. Goku made a mistake, we've all made mistakes. Hein should have contacted Goku via means of PM or IM, he didn't have to come and insult us all and try to make us all out to be scheming.

It's not even as if Goku tried to take credit for these icons, he's merely distributing them.

And for those who never read that little file in my iconsets here is the text what's in it:

Alilm, I don't and never have supported the suppression of another's viewpoint, but considering the fact that your work was removed from DesignTechnika for almost a precise trace-over of Marvilla's icons is certainly not commendable. I don't think you're the best person to be offering up combative opinions on misusing artists icons. :(

#71328

Smith, Thank you for pointing out my amateur approach to making icons. Ya see, DT dealt with my problem well, they didn't make a huge fuss, they didnt come onto a board and whine about it. I made a mistake, just like Goku did.

Please don't discard me as an idiot, I'm knowlegable of people ripping MY work back when I used to hand out open source web site designs (ages ago).

But I dealt with it sensibly, I merely poiltely asked the person to change the design and they complied.

#71330

please close this thread, i will not stand for smithy here taking potshots at, pretty much the best programmer/designer we have left in this community.

#71331

@ Alilm - I wasn't disregarding you "as an idiot". You're quite the intellect, but I don't appreciate you guy's trying to write this off as an accident when the problem was acknowledged and remained for one day. All things considered, the issue has been addressed and it is clearly it was innocent until disregarded... :(

@ Photo678 - I'll do one better for you; I'll no longer post my work over here. All future work can be found on http://www.designtechnika.com/main/

It wasn't a "potshot", merely a fact as this forum header states:

"Rips Rules

Rules: No flaming or rumors, and only FACTS can be posted. all assumptions will be deleted."

#71334

No flaming

Which is how this post started.

Smith, I respect your great work (check your respect), but the only reason this remained for a day is because of the simple reason, Goku doesnt spend every waking minute checking these boards.

I think it's sad you've decided not to post your icons here because of such a minor issue, but it's your choice.

#71336

I just have one question, any of the icon or wallpaper artist here include a readme or anything in the package of icons that lies out the boundries of how they would like their icons to be used?
