File Formats Question

Hello!

Axialis IconWorkshop and IconShop can read Icns files. Do they need to ask permission, pay for any rights or whatever? Does it make any difference if want to write a program that just reads a specific format but does not write in it?

(I'm more insterested in .Icns and .Icontainer formats)

i think that you can open them, but not save as them, without permission, but i could be wrong.
