Panther Video
horrible lifestyle videos like that make me wish apple computer died 10 years ago...
edit: "kickass!"
simply lovely...
it sux not to have a g4...
so many things arent enabled, such as the quartz extreme, certain video acceleration features such as the fast user swithcing and even iDVD...
:goku's job:
but I might be proven wrong when visiting apple store / macmall today (regarding the user switching feature.. doesnt work on my mac, but I believe its because its pre-release)
Goku, it has nothing to do with the G4, its ALL about the video card.
Upgrade to a Geforce2 and above, and you can use Quartz Extreme. It will automatically be enabled.
:woot: thats guys dreads are bad as hell :woot:
I never realised how everything on a mac is soooo smothe...... That video so makes me want one
I repect his dreads
e shouldn't tie them back though. Go Crazy~ :own:
Question: Is it as fast as it appears in the video?
Just noticed: Expose don't just show screenshots, but the actual windows shrinked (notice the changing ad in the iTunes window while in "expose mode")
i'm going to try this out on my b/w g3, it better work.
gotta say pretty impressive.
my dreds are better.

no contra, and since when did you become a mac expert? ![]()
I cant have anything better than what i have, including a gForce2, cause my AGP doesnt support it, its too old (x1).
And so you can feel a little better, I even asked at the store if those things are working in G3s and all, but all workers and experts (even in the lab) told me - "no quartz extreme, no effects".
This one worker told me he had the pre-release, and he said the fast user switching worked great - I told him it was never executed on my machine, so then he asked me if i have a G3 mac...
if you need to acheive the quartz extreme fully featured you gotta have (without risky tweaking): a G4 with an AGP accelerated card that contains AT LEAST32mb.
Again, this is a fact. Sadly, I dont have a G4, nor a 32mb memory card
-> but the great thing is that it runs GREAT. I would die if i had a pc with those specs.
Simply gold.
Those who have the ibook, you must have AGP with at least 32mb - I'm innocently asking : does panther features work out for you?
from http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/quartzextreme/
Requirements:
Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video GPUs: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti or any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
AND, AGP is backwards compatable. You can run an 8x AGP card on a 1x bus. Hell, 1x is still faster than PCI, and they make all cards for PCI (still).
So go out a buy a GF2. They're like $30. Id get 32mb or 64mb,even though 16 is the minimum (they're the same price now anyway).
Quartz is the GRAPHIC compositing engine. The reason its able to do amazing things is because it renders using the video card, instead of the CPU, so thats why its all dependant on your video card.

so ??? do you have an idea ?
thanks in advance. :joystick:
IngeneerMind: The video is streaming, so it cant just be downloaded like normal, you need a special program to capture it.

The video kept stopping for me, so after pressing Play each time until the whole progress bar was filled, I clicked the arrow pointing down (all the way on the right) and chose "Save As QuickTime Movie..."

there is no way in hell (hell froze over) I can have gf2 on my machine...![]()
iMac G3
Originally posted by contrasutra@Oct 25 2003, 06:12 PMOh, can you not upgrade the video card in the iMac?
Poor,poor Goku.
I'll freeze hell over just like stevie did -
whats annyoing here too, is that its for radeon cards (i got an AGP rage pro) and for PCI only.
It sux - I got 500mhz and thats the only iMac you cant upgrade (since its the latest one of the the G3 series, summer 2001), so practically a 333mhz one can get a boost to 800 or even 900 and be wayyyyy faster than mine.
Also, many accessories for the mac dont work below 600mhz.
now that I got almost all what quartz extreme requires me to have (agp, 16mb yet a Rage card) I thought I'd find my luck in looking to hack that focker. But then again I see these inferior hardware users get the ability to get what I cant and surpass the abilities of my mac with lower-end capabilities to begin with. God this is unreal.
So freaking sandwitched in a buffer zone.
Stevie, make something happen will ya...

Ohhhhhh, whoo, eh-em. Um, sorry Goku. ![]()

Goku:
Steve Jobs always has a solution for you: Buy their latest product. ![]()
Get a G5 and Panther, that'll last you.....6 decades. :goku:
6 months isn't very long at all...
Sheesh, I gotta tell you...Panther is truly, unbelievably amazing.
Why not port to PC!?
Common Apple! I would LOVE it! I would spend cold hard cash and run it on every machine I own ![]()
Even over my awesome Gentoo Linux install...
that video just convinced me that the next computer i buy will be a mac iBook.
