Jabber? Why Not?

I recently (since the MSN cutoff was announced) switched to JABBER as an IM protocol. Its free, open source, etc, etc (you know the rant).

Why dont more people use this? After the MSN thing, you'd think it'd be more popular.

We're geeks here, we shouldn't be afraid to try it. Considering programs like TRILLIAN and GAIM support it (along with the other protocols) you have nothing to lose.

So please people try out Jabber, its even compatabile with MSN, AIM, etc,so you only need ONE account to talk to everyone.

My S/N for those who are dying to talk to me: contrasutra@jabber.org

And Mods/Admins: Don't delete this :P

It's been out for a while, I just think it never caught on because it doesn't come with a lame ISP (MSN, Yahoo!/SBC, AOHell). I haven't used it but I heard it was good. Also I don't chat much, people always lie, including yourself. As for forums, that person is constantly there as are the posts so people tend to be themselves.

In principle, Jabber is great...

Unfortunately, I have lots of non-geek friends who use Windows/MSN Messenger for the usual reason - it was bundled/"forced" with Windows...

To whit, it's easier if I don't use anything else (as very few people I know use the other protocols)...

Let me make myself clearer.

I dont mean "Why doesn't everyone use Jabber", its pretty obvious.

what I mean is: "Why don't us geeks here use Jabber?"

WE know about it, but we don't use it. By "We" I mean everyone but me apparantly. Its really boring to talk with myself (I must say though, Im freaking hilarious) :P

Thank you, that is all.

Oh, I see...

Because we're all too lazy to be as zealous as you, contra. ;)

I do that all the time believe it or not.

I reitterate, I don't chat. And in order for all geeks to use it, they have to know about it and that has to happen by word of mouth which comes from seeing other people using it. So therefor, ADVERTISE BABY!!!

I think you just answered your own question bud.

As great as it is, no one uses it. Except a small handful of geeks. And most of us geeks, have a large list of contacts that aren't of our race.

I'm 18, legal adult!

Edit: Plus, I can't take a hint.

fissy@theoretic.com

Could we use an aquasoft subdomain for jabber? or use the aquasoft domain if Timmy runs his own dns and routing?

just a thought.

I'd be willing to run the server.

#68780

maybe if more people:

1) Knew what the hell Jabber was

2) Could actually find a page to get an account

3) had any idea how it is different

4) didnt have so many OTHER messenger names...

they'd jump on board.

for now, even Google doesnt have a link to a 'get a jabber account' page...

#68782

You get your account from the IM program, usually.

...

not when it is in Trillian, you cant

#68785

I really miss the days when I only had my ICQ account to take care of!

#68796

telmo@jabber.org

been using it for a while

#68802

Some people are still confused. Let me be very clear:

USE JABBER!

Thank you, that is all.

Maybe we should make a sticky of Jabber IDs, so people can see that it is in use.

#68829

yeah i was going to say, advocating jabber is a bit handicapped when we don't even have the little buttons for it on this "geek" site.

a jabber conference room for this site would be nice also.

#68830

But we don't want to......I'm being oppresed!

damn whitey is always tryin to tell us what IM client to use.

#68833

Give me reasons why I should switch from Trillian PRo 2.0 to Jabber and I might switch side :baby:

#68850

i think trillian pro 2 has support for jabber as a plugin

the only reason i don't use it is i don't know anyone that uses jabber

#68852

JABBER is a protocol, and TRILLIAN supports it.

You don't have to switch, just download the free (and small) Jabber plugin.

Some people should read. <_<

#68854

Whoops...

Thought Jabber is like another "trillian" chat software where you combine those IM apps

I never heard of it and none of my friends are using it :)

#68861

whats jabber and why do I have to download it :nerd:

So where's the aqua Jabber chat room?

Ask Tim. ;)

Honestly though, Jabber Chat kind of sucks. Anything more than 10 people, and it lags like hell.

The AquaXP IRC channel is fun, I visit it once in a blue moon.

And yes, I still use JABBER all the time.
