[preview] Itunes Album Art Downloader

Hey all.. You all don't know me and I do not know you all.. I am a new member, brought here by way of my search to skin iTunes.. Anyhow, I saw a request somewhere in here about creating an Album Art Downloader.. I thought this would be a fun project so I am attempting to create this little bugger..

I really knew nothing about the ID3 tag info but while playing around with iTunes and looking at the files using a Hex Editor, I saw how iTunes was saving the images to the ID3 tag and well created a program which can read/write/edit the images that are saved within the ID3 tag..

My program currently only supports JPEG images, but it can be easily modified for GIF, BMP and PNG.. I don't feel this will be necessary tho because the program will more than likely run off of amazon.com and only need to view/write jpeg images to the id3 tags..

Well i'll be posting an alpha version soon which will just be the editor of sorts so that we can get peeps testing it, then I will work on the whole Amazon.com integration which i have tons of experience on... ooh Yea.. Think of name for this proggie.. hehe It will be freeware... :P

What exactly do you mean by "freeware"? Do you have a license?

What language is it written in? Sounds like a scripting thing.

This sounds great though, if you deliver, you might get a shiny new badge. ;)

Well, I can't give out badges, but you get contrasutra's seal of approval.

freeware as in no charge.. free to you.. me.. the general public.. users of the windows version of itunes.. anyone who wants to use the program.. I'll come through.. I've been programming for over 5 years and have extensive knowledge using winsock and HTTP protocol as well as binary file manipulation and advanced win32 API programming. This program will be created in VB6 due to its ease of use and things of this nature and will probably be ported to c++ if need be but I don't see a need for it as of right now..

Still, make sure you include a license (BSD sounds like it would work for you), you wouldn't believe the problems people have had.

Also, title your posts correctly. ;)

wow

that`s proggie i`d really apreciate!

and for the name, how about iGet (not very original , i know but it explains the prog pretty well :))

Great to hear this being worked on! I am looking forward to seeing it.

Anyway on names, I can only suggest that you have to remember that adding images to id3 tags is helpful for more programs than iTunes. Although iTunes definitely puts it to its best use. So maybe something more generic like TagAlbumArt or something like that. I am not good with naming stuff, but just a suggestion.

Good to see someone taking up a project like this! :D

PS Thanks for making the prog evolution!

#68414

i cant wait. Album art is awlays a little extra pice that rounds everything out, but im not about to go hunting for the album art myself. Hope it works out.

#68419

i like iGrab but everyone uses i Everything

i think Open Art would be a cool name, or something to that effect

#68429

I have search a lot at Google after album art, often it turns out great, depend on the resolution you want, but 300x300 pix is good for me.

Thers is a program for iTunes OSX that does something similar.

Fetch Art for iTunes

Well i'm glad that theres such a positive response to this program... Its going pretty good.. Just organizing the code.. Doing some extensive testing so that when I release the little test version, there will hopefully be no bugz.. hehe "YEA RIGHT!" i'm sure there will be bugz and I will not be responsible if its screws up on of your mp3's.. although there is a 99.8% chance that it wouldn't.. worst case, your id3 tag gets deleted.. but even then.. hehe It's a little difficult trying to figure out how exactly iTunes saves it's bits but i've figured it out like i said before I'm just organzing the code.. cya
