Am in two minds about this update. I'm currently the owner of a 12" 900MHz iBook, and I'm not feeling jealous, wishing I'd waited, anything like that.

With this update to the 12" (the 14" doesn't really interest me, it's unnecessary size that I personally do not want/need) the clock speed has actually decreased from 900MHz max to 800MHz. The Altivec optimisations will naturally help, but in general applications, the G3 is still faster. I also cannot for a second believe that a G4 will give as good battery life as the G3. With general use, I get around three hours forty minutes, around two and a half hours with a heavier load (DVDs etc), which is very strong.

The new ones can still only take up to 640MB RAM, and in some ways this is a backwards step - very odd for an upgrade. For a professed 12" fan, I'm not disappointed that my machine is now outmoded, as I believe that this update isn't quite all it could be. The new price point is positive though, and finally the iBook has a combo drive by default - about time too.

Speaking of regrets, I wish Apple wouldn't release a PB G5 at Macworld in January. Or I'll regret getting a PB now.

I'd say wait until the pBook G5 is released and get that. If you get a pBook G4, Apple will release it within the next couple of months so you'll feel regret. At lease when you get the G5, you have a good solid year or more to not feel regret. And you could save money and get the higher end model (Y) . That's what I feel.

You're kidding me right? I've waited for my (first) mac all my life, which will be in my hands this Saturday along with Panther!!

I don't think Apple could have fix the heat problem for the G5. Well, I hope they haven't. I just have to keep saying that to make myself believe it.

Wouldn't make economic sense, in my opinion, for Apple to go and release new Powerbooks with a G5 so soon. The current ones were only introduced last month.

Expect a G5-based Powerbook in April at the very earliest, late summer being my tip though.

looking or an opinion,

I;ve been thinking of getting a book of some sort, either I or power. I was leaning slightly more towards the powerbook until the new ibook came.

Do you think heat problems have been solved with the g4 in the books?

Also, im not very mac literate and am just curious what performance of the new ibook would be, say running indesign, photshop illustrator. Nothing too large in terms of file size, but large enough.

Any opinons from people out there, im not looking for a powerhorse, or a desktop replacement Im just looking for something to allow me to be a bit more mobile as a digital photog.

any thoughts would be be appreciated!
