Shellwm Beta 0.1

Read here:

The idea comes from blueboxWM - since it will be limited to bluebox only, and since I've always wanted to be able to skin windows with an opensource software, when I found the sources of CustomEyes I immediately started this project: a Windows skin application dedicated to all the win32 shell replacement apps.

e-sushi and ilmcuts joined the project from the start, so there is a "dev team" who's trying to make ShellWM better :)

ShellWM is based on the sourcecode of CustomEyes v. 0.30 by Didier Abderrahmane (dabder@glabouni.com). This is the original CustomEyes site .

CustomEyes was a great app, with some stability problems and some skinning abilities that we found unnecessary: ShellWM is limited to skinning the Windows frames and the titlebar buttons - we've removed the skinning of checkboxes, radiobuttons, dialog backgrounds, and we're still trying to remove the menubar skinning without blowing up our current stability... We've also removed the skin editor (one of the main sources of CustomEyes instability), but we hope to redevelop a new application that does the skinn-editor job a bit better. As for now, we're pretty satisfied with ShellWM's stability and we're convinced that you'll have no problem in configuring your own, personal window skins from the current status...

Our next step will be the release of a Litestep module that will allow you to automatically change the window skins according to the selected litestep theme; we also hope that other shell developers will join us in our development efforts and contribute their wisdom and experience, or at least will realize a plugin to integrate ShellWM in BlackBox, geOshell, sharpE and all those other nifty shell replacements.

We've included in this first beta some *non-official* skins for various available win32 shells. If the developers of the shells would like to submit instead an *official* skin, we'll be happy to include them in the next releases

Is't this great news?

purrdy cool.

So I guess its basically WindowBlinds except there is no damage to the bank account? ;)

Great! It's loaded fast and uses less resources! Keep up the good work!

So here's a first list of some bugs I found:

  • Skin doesn't affect allready opened windows - need to be re-opened to be applied.

  • My Explorer is set to display the path of an open folder in the titlebar of the current window - Shellwm only shows "Explorer" in the titlebar

  • Doesn't work correct with "Y'z Shadow": If you open an window the shadow is drawn, but if you move it the shadow stays at the original position of the window. Only disabling "Y'z Shadow" hides the shadow

  • If you open/minimize windows like Explorer, Taskmanager or Control Panel the Desktop flickers / redraws /actualize

So long,

Cassiel

Are the min/max/close buttons able to me relocated? I tried one of the first versions of CustomEyes and this was not possible. Just purelly skinning...

I wan't left button's. :)

Cheers.

You can place the max/min/close buttons on the left side of an window. I tried to make a aqua-skin for ShellWM, but it just supports BMP, no transparency and so you can't make an skin with rounded windows...

Well it's a nice idea. I'm sorry to say though border support is just not enough for me.

I like WB cause it skins practially every single widget and has really flexible window borders and scripting. The closest thing to replacing WB for me would be chroma.

This reminds me a bit of eFX. Or, illumination (which is open sourced too if I remember correctly).

To go with blackbox I think it should take the vector style from the shell and use that cause it is defined in the blackbox theme. Just like it is in blueboxWM.

Don't take this as a bash or anything though. I'm just being honest here.

I'm sure there are quite a few shell users out there who might appreciate your efforts.

yes. it does...

however..

it draws the TOP frame, between the LEFT & RIGHT borders..

which, so far, is being quite a pain...

i'm sure i'll figure it out though...

Download Aqua_ShellWM

here's a download..

made with resources from the real OS 10.1 blue theme.

this looks quite nice. when layed ontop an Aqua MSStyle.

but keep in mind..

there are 3 bugs with the program

1. CaptionFont size not customizable yet

2. error on taskbar (window names)

3. doesn't display "Display Properties" correctly..

enjoy

New Bug: Skins are not applied to programs written in VisualBasic. I tried everything within VB to get it work, but it seems that's a bug within ShellWM.

Another Bug: If you deactivate an window reactivate it, the window moves everytime 1 pixel down.

Has anybody noticed that ShellWM interferes with Y'z Shadow...if ShellWM is running, all shadows and transparencies applied using Y'z Shadow get disabled...

Siddharth

#6902

This has great potential, but the little bugs prohibit me from using it regularly

Any news about fixing these little problems?

#6905

Here ya go

Brushed_Blue

for those of you who like the brushed look..

enjoy..

(this had to be made from scratch)

i'll have a graphite brushed out soon..

#6998

ok this program really doesnt like trillian.. even if i put it in the exclusion list.

#7003

Yah, it doesn't work with trillian at all...Well, ShellWM will just have to be run when I do screenshots then...left justified buttons are great, but the naming bug and the trillian incompatibility is making this thing being taken out of startup for me...nice theme though ja, works well

#7069

Well, there's also a MAJOR Winamp incompatibility issue with this also, whenever you try to click anything in Winamp 2, it either screws the skin or it makes it so winamp is a nice mouse trail...LoL

if there is an incompatability..

add it to the exclusion list..

WinAmp 2.80 works fine for me when it's in the exclusion list..
