[help] Dual Booting

Hey Guys and Gals,

I have observed that running Command And Conquer Generals on Windows XP is kinda slow, but on Windows 98, the Generals is fast. So I think Windows 98 is for my games....

Sorry for the repeatition but my decision is final.... Im gonna dual boot Windows 98 with Windows XP......

I have a 40GB hard disk (38.3GB to be exact). The hard disk has 2 Paritions...

Partition 1 - Windows XP

Partition Drive Letter : C:\

Capacity - 35.3GB

Used Space - 19.6GB

Free Space - 15.6GB

Partition 2 - Backup

Partition Drive Letter : F:\

Capacity - 2.96GB

Used Space - 1.74GB

Free Space - 1.21GB.

My plan is to get a bunch of space to Partition 1, around 10-12GB for my games... However some says that Windows 98 should be installed on the 1st 1024 cylinder or cylindrical check.... So, Windows 98 should be installed First.. But its not a deal, having BootMagic will fix the problem, But I don't know how... That is why Im asking for help.

Here's my Plan:

Create a 10-12GB partition for Windows 98. Getting a space from Partition1. Please teach me how to do it....

QUESTIONS, Questions, QUESTIONS:

#1 - Should the main partition or the boot partition shoeld be always C:? Coz my drive letter of the Partition 1 is C:\. So I think WIndows 98 should use C:? coz the 1st 1024 cylinders...... So, deal... It will be C: But on XP, the installations identified that Im using C:. Will my data be corrupted on XP partition just because of the C:\ drive letter?

Install Windows 98 first.. on the second primary partition. (would be D:)

Install Windows XP on the First primary (would be C:)

Edit your boot.ini file to say this...

[boot loader]

In XP there is an Windows OS emulator built in so you can run older programs under their intended OS.

Simply right click the program, click properties, then select the Compatibility tab - next check the compatibility mode box and selct your desired OS from the drop down list.

The next time you play your game, it should run as if your playing it on Win 98.

I have never used this feature and I'm curious as your your results.

shouldn't have to dual boot using this method but then again... i haven't tried it.

Oh, let's see. But I think that option is only for opening programs that are not compatible to XP or has an Windows 95/98 check to open it on XP....

Oh well, I will try.

But please focus on the step....

You can't have Windows 98 on your D: drive - Windows 9x series OS' have to be on the C: drive.

Yeah, I did the same thing for gaming and win98, but I found you need to install win98 on C:\ (for the reasons in the edit).

Also your question regarding whether the C:\ drive change will affect your XP installation - the short answer is that it will affect your installation. the long answer is that you can safe boot and configure your way out of it but its a long and tedious process and some programs will never work until you reinstall them.

My advice would be to re-install everything starting with win98 on C:\

@Jumpers you're right, but I'm pretty sure that with big partitions (as in this case Jed wants to keep atleast 15GB for XP) win98 won't work on a secondary partition.

Another option would be to create both partitions as primary partitions (rather than one being primary and others being logical) and then changing the 'Active Partition' setting.

What this means is that when you want to boot in win98 you would set that to be the active partition and then when you reboot it will automatically boot into win98. Then when you want to boot in XP you would set the XP partition to 'Active' and then on reboot you'd be in XP.

Only that this is a messy way of doing it and you can't choose at startup which OS you want to start.

I stand (slightly) corrected. Windows 9x can be installed wherever you like, as long as your "system" partition is FAT32 or FAT16. That means your C: drive. In other words, if you have C: as Windows XP and D: as Win98, both drives have to be FAT32 for Win98 to work.

But I experiment on the PartitionMagic and then, the format is like this..

H: C: F:

11GB 20+GB 3GB

The target installation partition is H: for Windows 98.

But my only chance is to reformat everything.. then install first 98 then XP.. Thats it???

easiest thing to remember is anytime you do this, install them in order of release date, beginning with earliest(dos) to latest (xp)
